A Day in the Life of a Water Industry Regulation Team Leader: Making a Meaningful Impact

My journey into the realm of environmental regulation was not born out of a formal background in this field, but rather from a longstanding passion for nature. Throughout my childhood, I spent countless hours gardening with my parents and grandparents, where I learned the importance of patience, care, and respect for the environment.

As I progressed in my career, I became increasingly aware of the mounting pressures on our natural world, which prompted me to make a meaningful change. Thus, joining the Environment Agency emerged as a vital step forward, offering me the chance to align my professional life with my personal convictions while contributing to a cause of significant importance.

Transitioning to a New Role

The move to the Water Industry Regulation (WIR) team represented a considerable shift in my professional landscape. It was an entirely new environment, yet the support I received from the outset proved invaluable. Over the past two years, I have had the privilege of collaborating with colleagues who are not only exceptionally knowledgeable but also deeply passionate about their work. Whether within my immediate team or across the broader Water Industry Regulation and Land & Water divisions, there has always been a culture of support, knowledge sharing, and encouragement for my development.

This collaborative atmosphere has enabled me to infuse my own skills and leadership style into my role while simultaneously adapting to the Environment Agency’s systems, processes, and technologies. Consequently, I have been able to cultivate my position as Team Leader into one that feels both authentic and effective.

Leadership and Personal Growth

Leading a specialist regulatory team as a non-technical leader presented its own set of challenges. However, I consider it a privilege to guide a team of highly skilled Environment Officers, each bringing a wealth of technical expertise and a profound commitment to their roles. My foremost aim is to foster an environment where the team feels secure, supported, and empowered. This involves establishing trust, promoting collaboration, and ensuring that each member is equipped with the tools and backing necessary for success.

My daily responsibilities are diverse, often encompassing the support of officers in their professional development and accompanying them on-site during compliance inspections. This not only provides me with valuable insights into the challenges they encounter but also helps me to uphold health and safety standards consistently.

A crucial lesson I have learned is that effective regulation within this sector relies as much on fostering understanding as it does on enforcement. Empowering my team to comprehend the companies they oversee, grasp their assets and pressures, and leverage that knowledge to drive real outcomes is central to our approach. In the 2025/26 period alone, we conducted over 10,000 inspections nationwide, identifying more than 3,000 permit breaches and resulting in an equal number of demands for improvement, ranging from sewage works repairs to infrastructure upgrades. This combination of scrutiny and constructive feedback has already begun to alter the behaviour of water companies, underscoring the critical nature of our work.

Reflecting on Achievements

As I look back over the past two years, I take particular pride in three key accomplishments. Firstly, I have been involved in building a new team from the ground up. Uniting individuals, fostering an inclusive environment, and witnessing the team’s capacity to deliver results and drive change has been immensely gratifying.

Secondly, I serve as the portfolio lead for Communications and Engagement in our region. Together as a team, we have diligently worked to enhance our internal and external communication. By sharing insights into our operations, preparations, and the impacts of our regulatory activities, we are raising awareness and illustrating the positive changes our work brings to the environment and local communities.

Lastly, the shared sense of purpose within our team stands out. Every member in Lincolnshire and Northamptonshire is dedicated to protecting the environment, and this common goal cultivates strong, supportive relationships. There exists a mutual respect, openness, and a genuine willingness to assist one another, both within our immediate team and with colleagues across the broader region.

The Importance of Our Work

With water companies and water quality increasingly under public scrutiny, the significance of our work has never been greater. Our team plays a pivotal role in safeguarding both the environment and local communities. From responding to incidents to conducting routine regulatory activities, we ensure that water companies fulfil their obligations and uphold environmental standards. This entails engaging with companies to understand their challenges, identifying issues early, and striving for improvements, alongside analysing data, performing on-site compliance inspections, and taking decisive enforcement action when necessary.

Nevertheless, there remains much to be done, and the scope of our work continues to expand. In 2025/26 alone, we conducted over 10,000 compliance inspections nationwide. The insights gleaned from these inspections provide a clearer understanding of the challenges we face across water company assets, paving the way for more targeted and effective regulation in the future.

Two years into this role, I find myself still genuinely enjoying the work. Each day presents new challenges and opportunities, keeping me motivated and engaged. For me, this career transition has been about discovering purpose, and in my quest to protect and enhance the environment upon which we all depend, I have undoubtedly found it.
