The UK is poised to enhance its export capabilities significantly, with a delegation of Chinese business leaders arriving to foster new market opportunities and strengthen commercial relationships. This initiative aims to open doors for UK exporters, particularly small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), facilitating their entry into China’s vast consumer market.
Strengthening Economic Ties Through Strategic Meetings
High-ranking officials from both nations will convene as UK Trade Secretary Peter Kyle and China’s Minister of Commerce, Wang Wentao, co-chair the 15th UK–China Joint Economic and Trade Commission (JETCO) at Mansion House on July 2. This meeting builds upon the successful visit of the Prime Minister to China earlier in the year and focuses on supporting British businesses across various sectors, including life sciences and professional services.
The UK government remains committed to engaging with China, particularly where mutually beneficial opportunities for trade and investment exist, while also addressing concerns related to national security. Although the UK ranks as the world’s second-largest exporter of services, China currently stands as the UK’s ninth-largest service export market, indicating substantial potential for growth in this sector.
Ambitious Goals for UK Service Exports
Peter Kyle articulated the UK’s ambition to enhance its services exports, urging a more proactive approach in promoting British professionals such as engineers, architects, and accountants in the Chinese market. He emphasised the need for resilience and secure growth in the face of global uncertainties.
As part of the JETCO discussions, around 200 innovative UK and Chinese businesses will participate in a significant event dubbed “Export to China.” This gathering will feature prominent brands such as Brompton Bikes and HSBC, alongside major Chinese firms like JD.com and ICBC, showcasing the eagerness for deeper commercial connections.
Recent Successes and New Initiatives
Recent achievements between the UK and China include Formula E’s expansion of commercial partnerships within China and Barclays’ introduction of Panda Bonds, marking the first entry of a UK bank into China’s domestic bond market. Furthermore, collaborations are underway between the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA) and Chinese government bodies to facilitate mutual recognition of professional qualifications.
The Royal College of Surgeons of England (RCS) is also making strides by partnering with various healthcare institutions across China to enhance surgical training and standards. In addition, Intelligent Fabric Technologies has established a presence in Hong Kong and Shanghai to commercialise its innovative DreamSkin technology, which caters to individuals with sensitive and ageing skin.
Launching the Trade Booster Initiative
The visit serves as the launchpad for the “Trade Booster,” an initiative spearheaded by the China-Britain Business Council, HSBC, ICBC, and JD.com. This programme aims to assist UK businesses in expanding exports to China by offering practical and targeted support tailored to succeed in the world’s second-largest consumer market.
With vast opportunities awaiting UK exporters in China, the Trade Booster initiative provides SMEs with a new avenue to scale their operations. Additionally, the UK-China Professional and Business Services Matchmaking platform has been established to connect major Chinese companies with leading UK service firms, facilitating capital raising and investment opportunities.
Encouraging Growth and Innovation
Stuart Tait, Head of Commercial Banking at HSBC UK, underscored the importance of UK exporters as a vital component of economic growth, job creation, and innovation. He welcomed the latest announcements as steps forward in aiding businesses to access new markets, building on the Prime Minister’s earlier visit to China.
Will Butler-Adams, CEO of Brompton Bikes, shared his experience of exporting to China for nearly two decades. He highlighted the company’s commitment to promoting a cleaner, healthier lifestyle through cycling and expressed satisfaction with the community they have built in China.
Future Prospects for UK-China Trade Relations
Sir Sebastian Wood, Chair of the China-Britain Business Council, expressed enthusiasm for Minister Wang Wentao’s visit, noting its significance in strengthening economic ties. He pointed out that China, including Hong Kong, is the UK’s third-largest trading partner, with trade reaching £135 billion in 2025, an increase of 5.6% from the previous year, alongside services exports amounting to £21 billion.
Discussions are also underway regarding a Joint Feasibility Study to explore a bilateral Trade in Services Agreement, which would further open the Chinese market to the UK’s renowned service sector. This reflects the UK government’s dedication to fostering a pragmatic, business-oriented relationship with China that supports job creation and drives economic growth.
