Significant Advancements at SIXEP Continuity Plant with Latest Crane Lifts

The SIXEP Continuity Plant (SCP) has achieved a significant milestone, with teams successfully completing a series of major crane lifts at the Sellafield site. This new facility, developed through the Programme and Project Partners (PPP), is now three-quarters complete and is on schedule to commence operations in 2029.

The primary structures of the plant have been finalised and protected against adverse weather conditions. Current efforts are concentrated on the interior fit-out and the installation of specialised equipment essential for the plant’s operations.

Transitioning to Advanced Operations

Upon completion, the SCP will assume the functions of the existing Site Ion Exchange Effluent Plant (SIXEP), which has been operational since 1985. The plant plays a crucial role in maintaining the safety and environmental standards at Sellafield by removing radioactive materials from the water used in various site operations before it is discharged into the sea. Often referred to as the site’s “kidneys”, the plant is vital for ensuring the continued safe operation of this process.

Recent crane lifts have successfully positioned 14 pump and valve modules, each weighing 16 tonnes. Additionally, a substantial 55-tonne gantry crane has been installed, spanning an impressive 21 metres across the plant.

Steve Harnwell, the managing director of PPP, expressed his satisfaction with the progress made: “After years of design, engineering, and manufacturing, I’m delighted to see the plant’s operational equipment arriving on site. Installing this equipment on a nuclear site is no mean feat, and our teams have meticulously planned every detail.”

Harnwell further noted, “Every major project we are delivering at Sellafield is a step towards safely managing and reducing the UK’s most hazardous nuclear materials. We are creating facilities for various types of nuclear materials, processing plants, and analytical facilities. This is infrastructure with a clear purpose.”

The collaborative effort of numerous organisations involved in the project serves as a powerful testament to what UK infrastructure can achieve. Harnwell emphasised the commitment to delivering with purpose, leading with expertise, and creating lasting value.

A Long-Term Vision for Safety

As equipment continues to arrive and be installed, the SCP is steadily progressing towards its operational phase. The new facility is projected to carry on this essential work until at least 2060, reinforcing Sellafield’s mission to mitigate risks and implement the site’s long-term clean-up strategy.

This recent progress coincides with PPP celebrating seven years of successful delivery at Sellafield. Established in 2019, PPP unites Sellafield Ltd, KBR, Amentum, Morgan Sindall Infrastructure, Altrad Babcock, and a comprehensive supply chain to execute major infrastructure projects effectively.
