Is Your Nose Causing You Trouble? Discover If You Might Have a Deviated Septum!

Understanding the Deviated Septum

A deviated septum occurs when the partition between the two nasal passages is misaligned or damaged. While it may appear to be a minor issue, it can significantly affect health and daily comfort. The septum is comprised of cartilage and bone, serving as the wall that separates the nostrils. In an ideal anatomical scenario, this wall would be perfectly centred. However, Consultant ENT Surgeon, Mr Samit Unadkat from My Nose London, notes that this is seldom the case.

“A deviated septum indicates that this wall is off-centre, which typically happens in one of two ways,” explains Unadkat. “It may develop as the nose grows, making it a condition many are effectively born with, or it can result from an injury—such as a sporting mishap, a fall, or even trauma during childbirth.”

According to Unadkat, deviated septums are very common, with studies indicating that most individuals exhibit some degree of deviation, yet for many, it does not lead to any significant problems.

Recognising Symptoms of a Deviated Septum

The symptoms associated with a deviated septum can be rather subtle. Many individuals may find themselves accustomed to certain discomforts over time, which does not mean those symptoms are insignificant. Unadkat points out that a common issue for many is the difficulty in sleeping comfortably on one side, as lying on their ‘better’ side may exacerbate the blockage in the other nostril.

“No single symptom definitively indicates a deviated septum,” he states. “However, when considered collectively, they create a compelling case for further investigation.” If you suspect you have a deviated septum, consulting your doctor is advisable rather than attempting to self-diagnose. Although the condition itself is rarely dangerous and may not necessitate treatment, a proper diagnosis can provide clarity on managing symptoms effectively.

Persistent symptoms, even if benign, can adversely impact overall wellbeing. If these symptoms become bothersome, seeking medical advice is prudent rather than enduring discomfort without resolution.

Quality of Life Considerations

For most individuals, a deviated septum poses more of a quality-of-life issue rather than a severe health threat. While it is typically a mere annoyance, it can gradually influence sleep patterns, general comfort, and physical activity levels. Unadkat cautions against dismissing the condition as trivial, as significant obstructions may lead to poor-quality sleep or even contribute to obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA), which can have far-reaching effects on daytime alertness, mood, and cardiovascular health.

“Chronic blockage may also increase the risk of recurrent sinus infections and nosebleeds,” he adds. “While the septum itself is generally not hazardous, the complications that arise from it warrant consideration.”

Diagnostic Procedures and Treatment Options

To diagnose a deviated septum, your doctor will begin by inquiring about your medical history and symptoms, followed by a physical examination. This may involve using a thin endoscope to inspect the interior of your nose. “This allows the doctor to ascertain not only that the septum is deviated, but also to identify the precise location of the deviation,” Unadkat clarifies. “The specific site of the deviation is crucial, as it influences treatment options.”

Your healthcare provider will also investigate other potential causes that might be contributing to your symptoms, such as allergies or swollen turbinates—small structures within the nose that can enlarge and restrict airflow.

“In some cases, if sinus involvement is suspected, a computed tomography (CT) scan might provide additional insights,” Unadkat remarks. “Typically, there is no immediate rush to surgery. Most often, the first logical step is to address any reversible issues and assess how much that alleviates your symptoms.”

Managing Symptoms Without Surgery

While surgical straightening of a deviated septum is not possible without an operation, being diagnosed with one does not automatically necessitate surgery. If symptoms are manageable, there are various non-surgical methods to improve breathing and alleviate discomfort.

Medications, such as corticosteroids, may reduce inflammation and swollenness of the turbinates, which frequently accompany a deviated septum and can worsen nasal blockage. If allergies, such as hay fever or sensitivity to dust mites, contribute to your discomfort, appropriate allergy treatments could significantly enhance nasal airflow.

Additionally, using a nasal dilator at night may help widen the nasal passages, especially if the nasal valve is part of the blockage issue. Ultimately, the decision regarding surgery rests with your doctor, who will consider whether the severity of your symptoms warrants such an intervention. If daily life is significantly impacted, and symptoms persist despite management efforts, surgical options may be worth exploring.

If you are troubled by your symptoms, it is always advisable to consult your doctor rather than attempting to diagnose the issue independently. Whether the most suitable course of action involves symptom management or surgical intervention, your healthcare provider can guide you through the available options and assist in determining the best approach for your situation.
