Chancellor Affirms Commitment to Safeguard UK Economy Resilience with Upcoming Budget Amid Global Challenges

Chancellor Advocates for Global Cooperation Amid Economic Challenges

The Chancellor of the Exchequer, John Healey, convened with international finance ministers in Bangkok, amidst escalating pressures stemming from conflicts in the Middle East and Ukraine. Healey emphasised the importance of international collaboration in the lead-up to the UK budget, particularly as the ongoing tensions impact global markets.

During these discussions, the Chancellor highlighted his commitment to securing growth for all, addressing the implications of artificial intelligence (AI) on the economy, facilitating international financing for growth in emerging markets, and providing support to developing nations grappling with debt liquidity issues.

Strengthening Economic Resilience

At the IMF Annual Meetings, Healey articulated how the UK and its global partners can work in tandem to counteract economic headwinds and bolster conditions for sustainable growth. The ongoing conflicts are contributing to rising energy prices and increasing government borrowing costs, which are felt by households and businesses worldwide. In response, the IMF has adjusted its inflation forecasts for G7 economies for 2027, raising them by an average of nearly 0.8 percentage points, while also reducing growth estimates by approximately 0.1 percentage points compared to pre-conflict assessments.

Despite these challenges, the UK has displayed notable resilience, with the IMF recently upgrading growth forecasts for 2026. The report also highlighted the UK’s efforts in deficit reduction, projecting that borrowing will reach its lowest level in six years, with the nation expected to maintain the lowest deficit within the G7 by 2029.

Key Focus Areas for International Collaboration

In his address, the Chancellor outlined how international cooperation could enhance global resilience. His focus areas included driving economic growth through innovation, specifically AI, building resilience against crises, and unlocking international finance for developmental needs. Healey underscored the significance of AI as a transformative technology that must be effectively harnessed, pledging that the UK will lead efforts to identify and mitigate barriers to its adoption.

As the UK prepares for its presidency of the G20, Healey expressed his intention to utilise the Finance Track to advance these critical issues. The UK’s priorities for the G20 presidency are set to be unveiled in early 2027.

Commitment to Fiscal Discipline and Global Growth

Chancellor Healey affirmed the resilience of the UK economy, stating, “My Budget will protect Britain’s resilience through this turbulent time.” He acknowledged the adverse impacts of the Middle East and Ukraine conflicts, which are driving up energy costs and government debt. He reiterated the importance of collaboration with allies to navigate these challenges.

Healey’s remarks reflected a commitment to maintaining trade flows, enhancing resilience, and ensuring equitable growth. He emphasised that fiscal discipline remains essential for supporting families and businesses today while fostering hope for the future.

Additionally, the Prime Minister has underscored the UK’s ongoing commitment to tackling significant global challenges, including AI, through its G20 presidency next year. The Finance Track will prioritise discussions on the implications of AI for growth and employment, alongside initiatives aimed at bolstering economic resilience and supporting growth in developing economies.

Upcoming G20 Meetings and Future Objectives

The G20 Finance Ministers and Central Bank Governors’ meeting is scheduled to occur in Edinburgh on 8 and 9 July 2027. The UK was confirmed as the host for the G20 in November 2025, with the Leaders’ Summit set to take place in Manchester.
