Funding Boost for Frontline Services to Combat Violence Against Women and Girls

Local initiatives aimed at combating violence against women and girls are set to receive a significant financial boost, with £14 million allocated to enhance grassroots efforts throughout the UK. This funding is designed to tackle various forms of violence and abuse, including online harassment, while also making public spaces safer and addressing the development of harmful behaviours.

These targeted resources will be directed towards frontline services and communities, fundamentally transforming how women and girls are shielded from violence and abuse. A notable component of this funding is the £10 million Prevention Accelerator fund, spearheaded by UK Research and Innovation. This initiative aims to provide essential support and funding to promising local projects, enabling them to expand and gain national traction.

Empowering Local Solutions for National Impact

The objective is to cultivate a UK-wide capability by investing in grassroots initiatives that demonstrate significant potential. By collaborating with government bodies, philanthropists, and social impact investors, these efforts aim to extend high-impact strategies into new communities, ensuring that effective solutions reach those who need them most.

First Secretary of State, Louise Haigh, has expressed a firm commitment to addressing this pressing issue. She stated, “Violence against women and girls is a stain on our society, and this government is committed to halving it within a decade. We are backing local projects to deliver real change, ensuring new ideas are properly funded and tested to tackle abuse at its root.”

Haigh further emphasised the importance of community involvement, stating, “This is how we put safety back in the hands of local communities, ensuring every woman and girl can live free from fear in their homes, in public spaces, and online.”

Building Evidence for Effective Interventions

In addition to the Prevention Accelerator fund, a further £4 million has been allocated through the Evaluation Accelerator Fund. This initiative aims to build a robust evidence base on effective strategies to prevent violence and abuse from occurring in the first place, facilitating quicker access to proven support systems for communities across the nation.

The funding will be utilised for research and evaluation across a variety of services. These include interventions in schools addressing harms in teenage relationships, enhancing police responses to technology-enabled abuses, and initiatives aimed at preventing violence in public spaces. Specific projects supported by this funding include:

– The implementation of new technology to ensure safe disclosures when individuals report abuse, allowing the government to better understand the associated risks and the potential of these tools.

– Initiatives focused on identifying and interrupting harmful relationship dynamics among those under the age of 16.
