Nestled approximately 100 metres from the sea and surrounded by lush green meadows, this hidden gem located in Llanes, Asturias, is undoubtedly one of the most distinctive coastal destinations in Europe. Featuring golden sands and crystal-clear waters that reach depths of around one metre, the beach’s waters flow through a network of underground caves. Spanning only 40 metres in length, Gulpiyuri, known locally as Playa de Gulpiyuri, is celebrated for its unique geographical characteristics.

The beach was sculpted by the erosive forces of the Cantabrian Sea, which carved out underground caverns in the surrounding cliffs, ultimately leading to the formation of this remarkable oasis. Despite its current popularity, Gulpiyuri Beach was not always a destination of interest.

For years, this semi-circular beach remained largely concealed by the meadows surrounding it. During high tide, the waters seamlessly envelop the sandy shore, leaving little evidence of its existence, which makes it easily overlooked by unwary visitors. However, as the tide recedes, the azure waters trickle through the caves, unveiling the beach once again—transforming it into a tropical sanctuary. Its pristine scenery has been remarkably preserved, thanks to its remote setting.

Accessing the Hidden Oasis

For those eager to experience Gulpiyuri Beach, access is relatively straightforward. A footpath leads from the parking area near San Antolín Beach, with steps descending from the rugged cliffs to the shoreline. Many visitors find the journey worthwhile. One holidaymaker shared their experience on TripAdvisor, stating, “Very beautiful landscape, seen from above or below. We parked in the paid parking lot (€4), which is very large. It was quite cool outside, but mild and pleasant on the beach because it was sheltered.”

Another visitor remarked, “Unique beach because of the water emanating from the rock. You can take a towel and fridge…. There is room there, but when the water rises, the beach is over. It is important to check the tides before visiting. There is parking.” A third reviewer expressed their appreciation for the beach’s unique setting, saying, “The beach is spectacular, as the setting is very peculiar, where mountains and beach meet.” However, they cautioned others about potential parking fines, noting, “They issue fines in an area where there is a tiny sign prohibiting entry, poorly marked and clearly a revenue collection tactic by the locals…”
