Brace for Wet and Windy Weather Next Week: What to Expect

After a predominantly dry and warm start to the weekend, the UK is bracing itself for a return to wetter and windier conditions beginning Sunday. Heavy rain and strong winds are anticipated to impact various regions, extending into the early part of next week.

Weekend Weather Overview

Friday is expected to be largely dry for most areas, with temperatures climbing to the mid-20s Celsius, and some locations in the southeast possibly reaching 27°C. As one moves further northwest, cloud cover will gradually increase, bringing patchy rain that will spread southeastwards, followed by blustery showers which may include hail and isolated thunderstorms.

Saturday is likely to offer the best weather of the weekend, characterised by sunny spells and predominantly dry conditions across central and southern regions of the UK. However, Scotland, Northern Ireland, and some northwestern parts of England and Wales will continue to see showers, with winds picking up in the northwest later in the day.

Weather Changes Coming on Sunday

As the weekend progresses, a weather front will push eastwards across the UK on Sunday. Rain is expected to move across the country, with the heaviest and most persistent downpours initially affecting western and northwestern regions. Thunderstorms may accompany this rainfall as it advances eastwards, with gusty winds also expected. In contrast, eastern and southeastern England should retain mostly fine and warm weather for much of the day, with temperatures potentially reaching 23°C in certain areas.

Monday may offer a respite for many, as lingering rain in the southeast is forecasted to clear, paving the way for brighter conditions and sunny intervals. Nevertheless, a few showers may persist in the northwestern regions, with temperatures forecasted to be cooler than those experienced on Sunday.

Atlantic Low Pressure and Its Impacts

By Tuesday, a deeper area of low pressure from the Atlantic is anticipated to approach the UK, heralding a more substantial period of wet and windy weather. Greg Wolverson, Deputy Chief Forecaster at the Met Office, noted, “We’re transitioning from a brief phase of settled weather to a more typical autumnal pattern influenced by the Atlantic.” He further explained that as the weekend progresses, weather fronts will begin to encroach from the northwest, leading to the development of a significant low-pressure system early next week.

This system is expected to draw in warm, moist air from the Atlantic, resulting in periods of rain and increasingly strong winds. While there remains some uncertainty regarding the exact path and intensity of this system, there is growing confidence that the heaviest and most persistent rainfall will occur across western and northwestern areas, with many parts of the UK likely to experience wet and windy weather on Tuesday and Wednesday. Remarkably, temperatures are also forecasted to rise, with highs reaching the mid-to-high 20s Celsius on both days, alongside notably warm overnight temperatures.
