Appointment of New British Ambassador to Bahrain: A New Chapter in Diplomatic Relations

Thomas Allan has been appointed as His Majesty’s Ambassador to the Kingdom of Bahrain, succeeding Alastair Long, who is set to take on a different role within the Diplomatic Service. Mr Allan is expected to assume his new position in January 2027.

Professional Background

Mr Allan boasts an extensive career within various governmental roles, demonstrating a wealth of experience in diplomacy and international relations. His most recent position from 2023 to 2026 was as Deputy Director for the Middle East and North Africa at the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO). Prior to this, he served as the Deputy Director of the National Security Secretariat at the Cabinet Office between 2020 and 2022.

Throughout his career, Mr Allan has held several significant roles that underline his expertise in economic advising and policy formulation. From 2018 to 2019, he was the Private Secretary to the Permanent Secretary at the Department for International Development (DFID). His experience in Tanzania as the Deputy Head of Office for DFID from 2014 to 2017 further solidified his understanding of international development and diplomatic relations.

A Diverse International Experience

Before his tenure in Tanzania, Mr Allan worked as an Economic Adviser for DFID in Yemen from 2011 to 2014, and previously in Sierra Leone from 2009 to 2011. His earlier roles include serving as an Economist in the Policy Division at DFID from 2008 to 2009, and as an Economist at the Department of Health from 2005 to 2008. His career began with a position as a Policy Officer for UNESCO in Addis Ababa from 2003 to 2005, which laid the groundwork for his future endeavours in international policy and development.
