Zelenskyy to Meet UK Leaders at Downing Street Amidst Boosted Support for Ukraine and Calls for Global Unity

Today, the Prime Minister will welcome President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to Downing Street, reaffirming the United Kingdom’s unwavering support for Ukraine amidst ongoing conflict. The Prime Minister is expected to convey a message of solidarity, emphasising that the UK stands ready to assist Ukraine for as long as necessary.

Enhanced Military and Fiscal Support for Ukraine

During the meeting, the Prime Minister will announce plans for an escalation in support measures for Ukraine. Ministers have been tasked with developing additional sanctions, military assistance, and financial packages aimed at providing urgent aid in the weeks ahead. This includes accelerating the delivery of critical air defence missiles to bolster Ukraine’s defensive capabilities.

The Chancellor is also actively engaging with international partners at the IMF meetings, advocating for increased support for Ukraine and urging compliance with calls from the United States for a complete energy ceasefire with Russia. This initiative comes as the UK intensifies its efforts to rally global allies in applying pressure on President Putin.

Significant Military Deliveries and Strategic Sanctions

As part of the UK’s commitment, £45 million worth of surface-to-air missiles will be delivered, alongside plans to implement a ban on Russian liquefied natural gas (LNG) exports. This measure aims to restrict Russia’s access to the UK’s premier shipping and insurance services, thereby curtailing its economic capabilities.

The UK will also expedite the supply of British Lightweight Multirole Missiles (LMMs), which have shown remarkable effectiveness against high-speed jet-powered drones that pose a significant threat beyond the front lines of the conflict, reaching targets in Kyiv and other locations. These drones, being faster and capable of flying at higher altitudes than the propeller-driven Shaheds, present considerable challenges for detection and interception.

Over the next four years, the UK has committed £1.6 billion to deliver over 5,000 LMMs to Ukraine, with an immediate acceleration of £10 million from the current missile package to address the urgent needs as winter approaches.

Firm Commitment to Ukraine’s Sovereignty

Prior to the meeting, Prime Minister Andy Burnham articulated the importance of the UK’s support for Ukraine, stating, “Our rock-solid support to Ukraine is vital for keeping us safe here in the UK and ensuring those on the frontlines have the equipment they need to push back Russia.” He further assured the Ukrainian people of the UK’s enduring commitment, stating, “We are with you for as long as it takes, and we will go further and faster in our support to back your courageous fight for peace in Europe.”

The Prime Minister’s remarks underscore the necessity of standing firm against Russian aggression, which he views as crucial not only for Ukraine’s sovereignty but also for the stability of Europe as a whole.

International Collaboration and Unified Response

Meanwhile, Chancellor John Healey is leveraging his platform at the IMF in Bangkok to encourage international partners to implement a ban on Russian LNG, following the UK’s lead. This plea aligns with efforts made by the Foreign Secretary at the Warsaw Security Forum, reinforcing the message of unity among allies in the face of ongoing conflict.

Amidst Russia’s persistent attacks on Ukraine’s capital and energy infrastructure, the Chancellor will advocate for a collective European response, highlighting the importance of a unified stance in support of Ukraine’s sovereignty and resilience. He stated, “Conflict in the Middle East and in Europe is hitting people across the world. As the full-scale invasion of Ukraine by Putin continues, our commitment to the Ukrainian people is unshakeable.”
