UN Human Rights Council 63: Key Joint Statement Highlights from the Item 4 General Debate

Mr Vice-President,

I present this statement on behalf of a coalition of eleven nations that steadfastly endorse the two-State solution, aligning with pertinent UN Security Council resolutions and the New York Declaration. We believe this approach is the only viable pathway to achieve a just and enduring peace, along with security and dignity for both Israelis and Palestinians.

Concerns Over Israeli Settlements

Israeli settlements are deemed illegal under international law and represent a significant barrier to peace. The ongoing expansion of these settlements, the creation of new outposts, the appropriation of land, and the escalating violence from settlers pose serious threats to the feasibility of a future Palestinian state.

In light of the rapidly worsening circumstances on the ground, we have implemented new measures, supported European restrictions, or are in the process of considering actions aimed at safeguarding the viability of the two-State solution. This includes imposing restrictions on settlement activities and targeting those who support, facilitate, or benefit from such actions.

Call for Compliance with International Law

We urge Israel to immediately adhere to its obligations under international law by halting the expansion of settlements, preventing and addressing settler violence, and thoroughly investigating allegations against Israeli forces. Furthermore, we reiterate our unwavering commitment to Israel’s security and unequivocally condemn acts of terrorism, including the attacks perpetrated by Hamas on 7 October.

Our dedication to upholding international law and protecting the two-State solution remains resolute.
