UK's Statement at UN Human Rights Council 63: Enhancing Dialogue on the Democratic Republic of the Congo's Human Rights Situation

Thank you, Mr Vice-President.

The United Kingdom expresses its gratitude to the High Commissioner for the recent report and wishes to convey its profound concern regarding the alarming human rights situation, particularly in the eastern region of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC).

We are deeply troubled by ongoing reports detailing unlawful killings, conflict-related sexual violence, the recruitment and deployment of children as soldiers, arbitrary detentions, and attacks on educational and healthcare facilities as well as civilian infrastructure. The findings from the United Nations investigations starkly highlight the dire circumstances faced by civilians in eastern DRC.

Impact on Vulnerable Populations

Our apprehension extends to the devastating impact of the conflict on women and children, the continuous displacement of millions, and the significant hindrances this poses to the provision of humanitarian aid. Additionally, the persistent transmission of Ebola remains a grave concern, further exacerbating the vulnerabilities of those affected by the conflict and placing immense pressure on already strained health services.

The United Kingdom reaffirms its commitment to the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the DRC. We urge all parties involved to adhere to international human rights and humanitarian laws. It is imperative that those responsible for violations and abuses are held accountable for their actions.

Call for International Action

In light of these pressing issues, we must ask: what additional measures are necessary from the international community to enhance the protection of civilians, bolster the response to the Ebola outbreak, and ensure accountability for human rights violations? The need for a coordinated and robust response has never been more critical in addressing these multifaceted challenges.
