UK’s Position on Item 4 General Debate at UN Human Rights Council 63: Key Insights and Updates

This Council must persist in addressing critical situations across various nations. In Iran, the events of January witnessed the tragic loss of thousands of peaceful protesters who were violently suppressed by Iranian security forces. It has been reported that at least thirty of these protesters have since been executed, with many more languishing on death row. The alarming accounts of torture and mistreatment of detainees—particularly among women, ethnic minorities, and religious groups such as the Baha’is and Christians—raise grave concerns. We stand firmly in support of holding perpetrators of these atrocious acts accountable.

Human Rights Violations in Hong Kong

In Hong Kong, the recent convictions of the leaders of the Hong Kong Alliance, alongside the prominent activist Joshua Wong, serve as stark illustrations of how the National Security Law is being wielded to suppress political expression and participation. We reiterate our call for the repeal of this Beijing-imposed legislation and advocate for the immediate release of Jimmy Lai. It is imperative that China honours its international commitments and obligations.

Escalating Crisis in Palestine

Additionally, the United Kingdom is deeply troubled by the worsening situation in Palestine. In Gaza, fundamental humanitarian needs continue to go unmet, while in the West Bank, the expansion of settlements and violence from settlers pose significant threats to the feasibility of a two-State solution. The UK has recently undertaken measures to prioritise this urgent issue. We implore all parties involved to adhere to international law, ensure the protection of civilians, and facilitate humanitarian access. Furthermore, we unequivocally condemn the abuses perpetrated by Hamas and other non-state actors.
