UK Unveils Significant Humanitarian Aid Package for Gaza's Relief and Recovery Efforts

In a significant development for humanitarian aid in the region, the UK has unveiled a comprehensive support package aimed at delivering essential services to hundreds of thousands of Palestinians. This initiative, announced by the Foreign Secretary during the UN General Assembly, underscores the UK’s commitment to addressing the pressing needs of those affected by the ongoing conflict.

Comprehensive Support for Essential Services

The newly introduced funding package, amounting to £88 million, is set to enhance access to vital healthcare, clean water, sanitation, and hygiene services. This financial commitment will also extend to waste management and protective support for individuals impacted by the crisis in both Gaza and the West Bank. The UK’s strategic approach has evolved recently, fostering partnerships with regional allies to bolster humanitarian efforts and recovery initiatives.

As the UK co-hosts a pivotal meeting with Jordan and Qatar at the UN General Assembly, senior government ministers will convene to discuss the urgent need for humanitarian access and recovery strategies in Gaza. This collaborative effort aims to unite regional partners, the United Nations, civil society organisations, Palestinian representatives, and international donors to devise actionable solutions for delivering lifesaving assistance to those in dire need.

Urgent Call for Unhindered Humanitarian Access

Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband emphasised the importance of ensuring that civilians in Gaza receive uninterrupted access to aid. He remarked, “The UK is pledging a major new package of aid to provide much-needed healthcare support to those desperately in need. We urge the Government of Israel to heed our Call to Action and take measures to lift unacceptable restrictions on Gaza.”

The support funded by the UK is expected to facilitate:

  • Medical consultations for up to 900,000 individuals through UK-supported healthcare facilities.
  • Rehabilitation and prosthetic treatment for 1,000 children suffering from blast injuries.
  • Solid waste management services benefitting approximately 900,000 people.
  • Emergency water provision through water trucking for 150,000 individuals.
  • Mental health and psychosocial support for 21,000 people.

Continuing Commitment to Humanitarian Aid

Since October 2023, UK humanitarian efforts have provided sustained food assistance to over 1.4 million individuals across the Palestinian Territories, alongside improved water, sanitation, and hygiene services for more than 830,000 people. The UK remains dedicated to collaborating with international partners to facilitate humanitarian access, safeguard civilians, and lay the groundwork for a sustainable recovery in Gaza.

Financial Commitment and Future Plans

In the current financial year, the UK has committed more than £88 million towards humanitarian and early recovery support for Palestinians. Furthermore, the bilateral Official Development Assistance (ODA) budget for Palestine for the financial year 26/27 is set at £127 million, a figure that was released in July 2026 as part of the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office’s planned allocations.

This package encompasses previously announced support through UNRWA and the UN Horizon Fund, in addition to new humanitarian funding. The collaborative efforts of the UK, Jordan, and Qatar at the UN General Assembly are vital in addressing the urgent needs for humanitarian access, healthcare provision, and recovery in Gaza, ensuring that essential services continue to reach those most in need.
