UK Strongly Condemns Houthi Attacks on Saudi Arabia in UN Security Council Statement

The United Kingdom, in collaboration with the United States, France, and Bahrain, convened a meeting today to express support for Yemen’s sovereignty and regional security.

Condemnation of Houthi Attacks

Firstly, the United Kingdom unequivocally condemns the Houthi attacks on Saudi Arabia that occurred today. These aggressive actions are both reckless and wholly unacceptable, posing a significant threat to regional security. Such provocations not only risk further escalation but also undermine ongoing efforts to achieve peace in Yemen. We stand firmly in solidarity with Saudi Arabia and reiterate our unwavering support for its security.

Concerns Over Iranian Activity

Secondly, we express profound concern regarding reports indicating that two Iranian aircraft landed in Yemen on 3 July and again today, without the necessary permissions and clearances from the relevant Yemeni authorities. This situation constitutes a blatant violation of Yemen’s sovereignty and contravenes international law. The United Kingdom reaffirms its steadfast commitment to the sovereignty, independence, territorial integrity, and unity of Yemen. All member states must adhere to these principles and fulfil their obligations as outlined in the UN Charter.

If verified, the allegations that these flights may have transported military personnel, technical experts, and equipment to bolster Houthi military capabilities would raise significant concerns. Such actions may indicate violations of pertinent Security Council resolutions, including resolutions 2216 and 2140. Any attempts to enhance Houthi military capabilities are intolerable and pose a risk to Yemen’s stability as well as regional peace. We strongly urge a thorough investigation of these allegations through the appropriate UN mechanisms, including the UN Panel of Experts, and call on all parties to fully cooperate with these efforts.

Solidarity with Gulf Partners

Lastly, the United Kingdom expresses its unwavering solidarity with our Gulf partners in light of further Iranian attacks across the region over the past 48 hours. These incidents have affected Qatar, Kuwait, Bahrain, Oman, and Jordan, as well as commercial shipping activities in the Strait of Hormuz. We condemn these reckless actions and advocate for de-escalation and a return to diplomatic dialogue.

President, Yemen has endured over a decade of conflict. The Yemeni people deserve a path towards peace, economic recovery, and stability, rather than actions that exacerbate regional tensions and increase the potential for renewed conflict. We urge the Houthis to avoid further escalation and encourage the utilisation of existing dialogue channels to address concerns and alleviate tensions.

The United Kingdom remains committed to collaborating with Council members, regional partners, and the Government of Yemen to promote de-escalation, uphold relevant Security Council resolutions, and advance a sustainable political solution to the ongoing conflict.
