UK Statement at the 2026 Berlin Process Leaders' Summit: Insights for the OSCE

Thank you, Mr Chair.

The United Kingdom extends its congratulations to Montenegro for successfully hosting the Berlin Process Summit and for its commendable leadership throughout the past year.

The Berlin Process plays a pivotal role in fostering tangible advancements in integration, resilience, and reconciliation within the Western Balkans, ultimately contributing to the strengthening of Europe as a whole.

Addressing Security Challenges Together

The security landscape in the Western Balkans is intricately linked to that of Europe as a whole. Threats do not recognise borders, and thus, our strategies to counteract malign influences that seek to exploit divisions within our societies and vulnerabilities within our institutions must encompass a broader approach than mere security measures.

Enhancing the strength of our institutions is fundamental to building resilience. Economic integration and a closer alignment with European standards not only foster opportunities but also prosperity. A steadfast commitment to gender equality and the eradication of violence against women and girls is essential; robust societies ensure that opportunities and security are accessible to all. Furthermore, while reconciliation may be a challenging process, it is vital for cultivating trust and social cohesion.

The Interconnectedness of Key Elements

Each of these components is indispensable, and their success cannot be achieved in isolation. The ongoing progress facilitated by the Berlin Process in promoting cooperation and resilience will ensure that it remains a relevant and significant framework for the future. The United Kingdom is committed to providing strong support for these efforts.

Thank you, Mr Chair.
