The United Kingdom expresses its approval regarding the recent adoption and is pleased to have cast its vote in favour.
The nation is firmly dedicated to the comprehensive execution of Colombia’s 2016 Peace Agreement across all sectors, recognising its critical importance for achieving enduring peace.
A decade later, a key takeaway is evident: safeguarding the achievements of the Agreement while addressing current security challenges are not opposing aims.
These objectives are mutually supportive and are vital not only for Colombia’s future but also for the stability and peace of the wider region.
Commitment to Rural Reform
We commend the Colombian Government’s commitment to rural reform, which will be integrated into domestic institutions.
As highlighted in statements made in this Chamber on 12 October by Foreign Minister Bula, this commitment encompasses formalised land ownership, infrastructure development, and economic opportunities for rural communities.
As we near the tenth anniversary of the Peace Agreement, it is essential to acknowledge the significant achievements it has realised.
Over 11,000 former combatants have remained demobilised and dedicated to upholding the agreement.
Ongoing Challenges and the Role of the Peace Agreement
Nevertheless, challenges persist.
Violence and shifting conflict dynamics continue to pose threats to communities, with illicit economies exacerbating the situation.
The Peace Agreement remains pivotal in addressing the underlying factors that perpetuate conflict.
Its implementation must be accompanied by a stronger state presence, territorial development, and effective security measures.
We appreciate the reflection of these priorities in today’s resolution.
The Importance of the United Nations Mission
Moreover, we recognise the significant role of the United Nations Mission.
As the situation in Colombia evolves, so too must the Mission.
Its capacity to provide credible verification and maintain engagement in regions affected by conflict is more crucial than ever.
Today’s resolution extends the Mission’s mandate until 31 October 2027, focusing on the verification of security implementation, demobilisation, and reintegration efforts.
The United Kingdom’s commitment to the Colombian people and their quest for lasting peace remains unwavering.
