Government Launches AI Taskforce to Propel Innovation

The government has unveiled a new Artificial Intelligence Taskforce, aimed at placing AI at the forefront of its strategy to harness the technology’s potential for economic growth, prosperity, and the transformation of public services. This initiative will be chaired by Lord Vallance, a prominent figure with extensive experience in scientific, technical, and public sector domains.

AI Minister Kanishka Narayan will lead the Taskforce and will actively participate in Cabinet discussions. Lord Vallance’s appointment as Chair of the Oxford-Cambridge Growth Corridor further underscores his pivotal role in driving forward the government’s agenda in this area.

This marks a significant moment as AI is now being positioned centrally within government operations. The Taskforce is set to take inspiration from successful models like the Vaccines Taskforce, which demonstrated how a dedicated and accountable unit could yield extraordinary results and tangible benefits for citizens nationwide.

Taskforce Objectives and Leadership Structure

The Taskforce will report directly to Cabinet Secretary Antonia Romeo and Minister Narayan, with Lord Vallance providing updates directly to the Prime Minister. The overarching goal of the Taskforce is to advance the Prime Minister’s agenda on AI, ensuring that the technology serves the public good and stimulates economic development across various regions.

Prime Minister Andy Burnham expressed his enthusiasm for the initiative, stating, “AI is rapidly changing our world, and we must ensure it benefits everyone. The potential is enormous if we approach it correctly. I envision AI sparking a new industrial revolution that fosters positive growth in every community.”

He commended Lord Vallance for his extensive public service record and expertise, emphasising that his leadership will help place AI at the heart of efforts to improve citizens’ lives.

Commitment to Transformative Technology

In response to his appointment, Lord Vallance remarked, “I am honoured to chair the AI Taskforce and the Oxford-Cambridge Growth Corridor. This government is making a clear statement about its commitment to leveraging AI and Science and Technology for the benefit of society.”

He highlighted the immense potential of AI to revolutionise public services, drive economic growth, and enhance the quality of life for citizens, vowing to ensure the Taskforce delivers meaningful outcomes.

Minister for Artificial Intelligence Kanishka Narayan added, “AI is poised to be the most significant technology in human history, which is why it has a place at the Cabinet table. We aim to reindustrialise with AI, bolster national security, and enhance public services.”

Operational Framework of the Taskforce

The Taskforce will operate under the auspices of First Secretary of State Louise Haigh in the Office for the Prime Minister and the Cabinet (OPMC). Within this framework, the AI Taskforce will collaborate closely with other key government functions, including No.10 and No.10 North. Its primary responsibility will be to guide and implement the government’s AI strategy effectively.

Additionally, the Taskforce will spearhead the adoption and transformation of AI across the public sector, with oversight of the existing AI Security Institute transferring to the OPMC.

Lord Vallance’s Esteemed Background

Lord Vallance is recognised as one of the UK’s leading figures, bridging the realms of science, government, academia, and industry. His reputation for fostering strong relationships and collaboration across sectors will be invaluable as the Taskforce seeks to implement its agenda.

He will also chair the Oxford to Cambridge Growth Corridor, a partnership designed to stimulate innovation and eliminate barriers to sustainable growth. This role builds on his previous experience as Ministerial Champion for the same corridor.

Previously, Lord Vallance served as the UK’s Government Chief Scientific Adviser from 2018 to 2023, providing critical scientific guidance during significant national challenges. His leadership of the Vaccines Taskforce during the COVID-19 pandemic, which successfully oversaw the UK’s vaccination programme, is particularly notable. Most recently, he held the position of Minister for Science, Innovation, Research and Nuclear in both the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology (DSIT) and the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ).
