UK Condemns Russia's Veto of Western Sahara Draft Resolution, Threatening Political Progress at UN Security Council

The United Kingdom has expressed significant disappointment regarding Russia’s decision to veto the proposed draft resolution. This action undermines the Council’s ability to address this matter effectively, jeopardising the deployment of the UN Mission and potentially hindering advancements in the political process concerning Western Sahara.

We acknowledge the leadership demonstrated by the United States on this resolution and appreciate the efforts of the Personal Envoy, de Mistura, in promoting the political dialogue.

It is imperative for Council members to consider the situation in Western Sahara with the aim of fostering progress towards a fair, enduring, and mutually agreed solution that genuinely facilitates the self-determination of the people in the region.

Furthermore, we reaffirm our stance that Morocco’s autonomy proposal from 2007 represents the most credible, viable, and pragmatic framework for achieving a lasting resolution to the dispute.
