UK exporters are poised for significant growth as a delegation of Chinese business leaders arrives to enhance trade relations and explore new markets. This initiative is part of the 15th UK–China Joint Economic and Trade Commission (JETCO), chaired by UK Trade Secretary Peter Kyle and China’s Minister of Commerce Wang Wentao at Mansion House on 2nd July. The meeting aims to bolster economic ties and promote growth across various high-value sectors, including life sciences and professional services.
Expanding Market Opportunities
The UK government is keen to engage with China, focusing on opportunities for collaboration and increasing trade and investment, while also addressing concerns regarding national security. Despite the UK being the world’s second-largest services exporter, China currently ranks as the ninth-largest destination for UK service exports, indicating untapped potential within the British service sector.
Peter Kyle has stated, “The UK is a services superpower, and I want us to turbocharge our services exports and get more British engineers, architects, and accountants exporting their skills to China.” He emphasised the need for ambitious strategies to ensure secure and resilient growth amid global uncertainties.
Ahead of the JETCO meeting, around 200 businesses from both nations, including renowned brands such as Brompton Bikes and HSBC, are set to participate in a new Export to China event. This gathering reflects a strong desire for deeper commercial partnerships, showcasing innovations from both sides, including major Chinese companies like JD.com and ICBC.
Recent Successes in Trade
Recent achievements in UK-China trade relations include Formula E’s expansion of commercial partnerships in China and Barclays’ pioneering Panda Bond issuances, marking the first entry of a UK bank into China’s domestic bond market. Additionally, the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA) is collaborating with the Chinese government to enhance mutual recognition of its qualifications, while the Royal College of Surgeons of England is partnering with various healthcare institutions in China to elevate surgical training standards.
Furthermore, Intelligent Fabric Technologies is establishing operations in Hong Kong and Shanghai to launch its patented DreamSkin technology, aimed at improving clothing for individuals with sensitive and ageing skin.
Introduction of the ‘Trade Booster’ Initiative
The visit also heralds the launch of the “Trade Booster,” an initiative spearheaded by the China-Britain Business Council (CBBC), HSBC, ICBC, and JD.com. This programme is designed to assist UK businesses in expanding their exports to China by providing essential support in the world’s second-largest consumer market.
Stuart Tait, Head of Commercial Banking at HSBC UK, remarked, “UK exporters are a vital engine of growth, jobs, and innovation. Today’s announcement is a welcome step to help more businesses reach new markets.” He added that HSBC UK is committed to facilitating trade relations and enhancing services trade to create significant opportunities for both nations.
Voices from the Business Community
Will Butler-Adams, CEO of Brompton Bikes, reflected on the company’s long-standing presence in China, noting their growth to over sixty stores and a dedicated community that promotes an active lifestyle. He expressed gratitude for the cultural exchange and relationships built over nearly two decades of exporting.
Sir Sebastian Wood, Chair of the China-Britain Business Council, welcomed the visit of Minister Wang Wentao, highlighting the importance of the UK-China trade relationship, which has seen total trade reach £135 billion in 2025, a 5.6% increase from the previous year. He expressed optimism about demystifying opportunities in China and supporting UK businesses in capitalising on the potential within this vast market.
Future Prospects for UK-China Trade
Discussions during the week also included a Joint Feasibility Study aimed at exploring a bilateral Trade in Services Agreement, which would further open the Chinese market to the UK’s leading service sector. This initiative underscores the government’s commitment to fostering a pragmatic, business-focused relationship with China that prioritises job creation, growth, and solidifies the UK’s position as an attractive destination for investment.
With numerous ventures and collaborations underway, the opportunities for UK exporters in China continue to expand, paving the way for a promising future in international trade.
