Three-Year-Old Boy Undergoes Five Surgeries After Alleged Crocodile Enclosure Incident

A three-year-old boy, who was reportedly thrown into a crocodile enclosure at a zoo last month, has undergone five surgeries and requires at least two more, his devastated family has disclosed. The incident occurred on June 18 at Johnsons of Old Hurst Zoo in Huntingdon, Cambridgeshire, when the toddler fell approximately 15 feet before being attacked by a crocodile. The child, whose name has not been released, was rescued and rushed to Addenbrooke’s Hospital in Cambridge in critical condition. Although he is now stable, he faces a long and arduous recovery ahead.

Family’s Ongoing Hospital Vigil

They mentioned that they have been “living at the hospital” for the past fortnight while their son underwent five operations. At least two additional surgeries are necessary, including a nerve reconstruction for his arm. The family statement read: “We are extremely grateful for everyone’s generosity. We could never thank you enough for the support you have given our family in this horrible time.” They added, “These last two weeks have been a very uncertain and unsettling time. This uncertainty remains as we still don’t know the extent of his feeling, movement and function in both of his arms, wrists and hands.”

The family noted that the true extent of the boy’s injuries would only be known once casts and bandages are removed, allowing him to start his rehabilitation journey. They acknowledged that this process is likely to be lengthy and uncertain.

Details of the Incident

Reports indicate that the boy fell onto a concrete walkway, suffering a broken arm and pelvis before landing in the water. He was subsequently attacked by either a saltwater or Nile crocodile in what the zoo’s owners described as “one of the most distressing” incidents in their history. Cambridgeshire Police confirmed that the boy was rescued by zoo staff, with co-owner Tracey Johnson reportedly jumping into the enclosure to save him.

Following the incident, a 30-year-old man from Norfolk was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder. However, he was later released on bail after being assessed as not fit for interview. It is believed that he has learning difficulties and was visiting the zoo with carers.
