Thousands of Young People Discover Exciting Agricultural Careers at Thriving Jobs Fair

Over 1,000 young individuals gathered at Norfolk’s inaugural Youth Guarantee Jobs Fair, where they explored various trades through hands-on simulations in welding and farming. The fair successfully connected 65 employers and partner organisations, offering valuable opportunities specifically tailored for young people from rural and countryside backgrounds.

These jobs fairs form a crucial component of the Government’s broader initiative to enhance youth employment, supported by a substantial £2.5 billion investment aimed at helping young people carve out a robust career path.

Engaging Experiences at AgriFest

During the event, participants at AgriFest were presented with the chance to delve into a spectrum of agricultural professions. They engaged in virtual reality welding simulations, training for heavy goods vehicle (HGV) operation, and took part in a project involving the construction of a water irrigation network.

An additional ’employability zone’ was set up to provide guidance on job searching, application completion, and interview preparation. This initiative aimed to equip young individuals with the confidence and skills necessary to embark on their employment journeys.

Work and Pensions Secretary Pat McFadden expressed his enthusiasm, stating, “Every young person deserves the chance to fulfil their potential, which is why we’re bringing jobs, training, and support directly into communities. I’m thrilled to witness businesses and local partners creating opportunities for hundreds of young people, not only offering interviews but also mentorship and career advice. Through the Youth Guarantee, we’re resolute in providing every young person with the opportunity to earn or learn.”

Impact of Youth Guarantee Jobs Fairs

Youth Guarantee Jobs Fairs have previously been hosted in cities such as Bristol, Glasgow, Cardiff, Nottingham, and London. These events have successfully facilitated over 1,000 young individuals transitioning into jobs, work experience, or training programmes.

Notable influencer and farmer, Farmer Will, highlighted the significance of such events, stating, “I believe it is essential to provide young people with the opportunity to connect with employers and discover the available opportunities. When starting out, it can be challenging to determine one’s path, and often, a simple conversation or a bit of encouragement can reveal what is possible.”

He added, “I am delighted to support the Agrifest Jobs Fair. There are fantastic opportunities within agriculture and the broader industry, and I hope the event instils confidence in young people to take that first step towards finding something they genuinely enjoy.”

A Commitment to Quality Pathways for Young People

The event underscored the Government’s pledge that all individuals under the age of 25 should have access to one of the following high-quality pathways: employment, continued education, an apprenticeship, or a traineeship, which may include a work experience placement or participation in a Sector-Based Work Academy Programme (SWAP).

The Jobs Fair exemplifies the Government’s ongoing efforts to facilitate young people’s entry into employment or training. The youth employment support package, backed by the £2.5 billion investment, aims to assist nearly one million young individuals and create 500,000 new opportunities.

Employers and Providers at the Jobs Fair

More than 65 employers and service providers from across Norfolk participated in the jobs fair, including notable organisations such as Contract Personnel, Cranswick, Elveden Farms, Earnest Doe, Everblue Solar, and the Royal Navy, among others. This diverse representation reflects a commitment to fostering a vibrant employment landscape for young people in the region.
