London’s tattoo scene now reaches far beyond the traditional walk-in parlour. Private, appointment-only studios, fineline specialists and paramedical artists who camouflage scars or recreate areolas after surgery work side by side across the city, and many of them design each piece around the person who will wear it, often after a consultation.
This article brings together a selection of tattoo studios in London: Red X Ink, AK Paramedical Studio and One by One. Three studios in Whitechapel, Battersea and Soho with different ways of approaching their craft.

Red X Ink
Red X Ink is a private, appointment-only tattoo and piercing studio in Whitechapel, East London. It was created by the artist Focu, who has more than 12 years of experience, and works with one client at a time. The studio offers late-night appointments for people with busy schedules and free consultations, and it also hosts seasonal guest artists.
Focu specialises in black and grey and colour realism, portraits and cover-ups. Every tattoo is designed for the person who will wear it, according to the client’s vision, and the studio does not accept designs copied from other artists. The team also takes on cover-ups and restorations, turning faded or unwanted ink into new designs.
Since October 2024, Red X Ink has offered Ephemeral tattoos, made with an ink designed to fade over time. The studio presents them as an option for people who are not ready for a lifelong commitment or who want to try a design before making it permanent. How long one lasts varies from person to person.
Alongside tattooing, the studio offers professional piercing, including dermals. For Red X Ink, its commitment to each client continues after the appointment.

AK Paramedical Studio
Anna Kovalchuk runs AK Paramedical Studio, a private studio in Battersea, south-west London, focused on reconstructive and paramedical micropigmentation. She holds a VTCT Level 4 qualification, has worked in London and St Petersburg, and has trained more than 70 practitioners across five countries. She describes her approach as "a highly specialised discipline where technical knowledge of skin, scar tissue and pigment meets artistic judgement".
Her practice centres on scar camouflage following surgery, trauma and burns, and on the camouflage of vitiligo and pigmentation irregularities. After cosmetic and plastic surgery, once the surgeon's work is complete and the tissues have fully healed, her work can become the final aesthetic stage. Camouflage reduces the visibility of a scar but does not erase it, and not every scar can be treated, so she usually recommends a small patch test first.
For people who have had a mastectomy or breast reconstruction, Anna recreates the areola and nipple with 3D tattooing once the skin has healed, and for women following mastectomy and breast reconstruction she provides these procedures on a complimentary basis.
She has built her practice around complex cases, including those that other practitioners have turned down. The first step is a calm, no-pressure consultation in which she assesses the skin and the client's goals.

One by One
One by One is a tattoo studio on Berwick Street in Soho, central London, which has been operating for more than ten years. Its team of resident artists works across a range of styles, from fineline and single-needle work to micro realism, black and grey realism, traditional and colour tattoos, as well as hand-poked pieces.
Fineline is the studio’s main speciality, and its artists advise each client on the placement of a new piece. After the session they cover the tattoo with a second-skin dressing and hand over an aftercare booklet. Resident artist Daniel Pineiro creates micro-realist pet portraits from several photographs, while ornamental fineline designs, with botanical, floral or celestial motifs, can be added to over time.
Clients book through a form setting out the design, placement and size, and can ask the studio to recommend an artist or request a consultation by email or in person, which it suggests for first tattoos. A few slots are kept each day for small walk-in pieces.
The studio works only with vegan, cruelty-free inks, has replaced many disposable plastics with plant-based alternatives and offsets its carbon footprint through Ecologi, which plants around 130 trees a month on its behalf. Over the years it has also hosted pop-ups, art installations and brand collaborations, among them three years as Pinterest’s partner at Cannes Lions.
