Red X Ink: a private tattoo studio in Whitechapel built around one client at a time

Red X Ink

Founded by the artist Focu, the appointment-only studio offers custom tattoos, cover-ups, piercing and Ephemeral ink designed to fade

Red X Ink is a private, appointment-only tattoo and piercing studio in the Whitechapel area of East London. It works with one client at a time, offers late-night appointments for people with busy schedules, and offers free consultations.

The artists

The studio was created by Focu, an artist with more than 12 years of experience. He specialises in black and grey and colour realism, portraits and cover-ups, and the studio says his cover-ups are "far from the usual 'too dark to cover'".

The studio also hosts seasonal guest artists: Giada, who creates geometric and ornamental tattoos inspired by nature, with dotwork, linework and black fill, and Wruce, who specialises in freehand full body suits with a cyber twist and has very limited availability, as he divides his time between Europe and the United States.

Designs that belong to the client

Every tattoo at Red X Ink is designed for the person who will wear it. The studio puts "the highest price on quality not quantity" and creates each design according to the client's vision, from bold statement pieces to fine line work. It is just as clear about what it will not do: it does not accept designs copied from other artists, quick Pinterest searches or any other form of plagiarism.

The team also takes on cover-ups and restorations, turning faded or unwanted ink into new designs. "We take our time with every client, ensuring each tattoo is unique and built to last," the studio says.

Ephemeral tattoos

Since October 2024, Red X Ink has offered Ephemeral tattoos, made with an ink designed to fade over time. The studio presents them as an option for people who are not ready for a lifelong commitment, who want to try a design before making it permanent, or who have religious or personal reasons for avoiding permanent ink. How long one lasts varies from person to person.

Piercing

Alongside tattooing, the studio offers professional piercing, including dermals. "We understand that tattoos and piercings are lifelong commitments, and we take that responsibility seriously," the team says. For Red X Ink, that commitment continues after the appointment: "Your journey with us doesn't end when you leave the studio."
