Statement from Northern Ireland’s Secretary of State: Key Updates and Insights

Following recent engagements with groups representing victims, survivors, and veterans, the Secretary of State has expressed a deep awareness of the ongoing impact of the Troubles on individuals in Northern Ireland and Great Britain. Reflecting on his initial weeks in office, he noted the pervasive pain, grief, and anger that many continue to experience.

This week, the Secretary of State met with several organisations, including WAVE, the CVS Victims & Survivors Forum, and SEFF, as well as the Commissioner for Victims and Survivors, Joe McVey, and Veterans Commissioner David Johnstone. He also held a roundtable discussion with veterans and visited the RUC Memorial Garden, which commemorates the service and sacrifice of officers, including those who lost their lives during the Troubles.

His aim, he stated, has been to engage with as many individuals and groups as possible to gain their insights and perspectives. Among his key observations is the belief that addressing the past is essential to shaping a better future. He emphasised the need for answers for families affected by the Troubles, particularly those of Armed Forces personnel who were killed.

The Secretary of State reaffirmed the Government’s commitment to the Northern Ireland Troubles Bill, which is set to progress through Parliament at the earliest opportunity. He acknowledged the importance of this legislation, describing it as a crucial opportunity to adequately address legacy issues and provide answers for those still grappling with the consequences of the Troubles.

In articulating his vision for the Bill, the Secretary of State expressed a strong desire to ensure that it benefits as many individuals impacted by the Troubles as possible.
