Severn Stoke’s Flood Risk Significantly Lowered as Winter Approaches

Severn Stoke's Flood Risk Significantly Lowered as Winter Approaches

Severn Stoke Flood Scheme Completed Ahead of Schedule

The Severn Stoke Flood Scheme has been successfully completed ahead of its projected timeline, significantly reducing the flood risk for homes, businesses, and vital infrastructure in the area just in time for winter. This initiative represents a collaborative effort between the Environment Agency and Worcestershire County Council, in partnership with Alun Griffiths Construction Ltd.

The project involved the construction of a new flood bank to the west of the village, alongside new drainage systems designed to effectively manage surface water. Additionally, a section of raised road was established where it intersects with the flood bank, ensuring enhanced protection against potential flooding.

In the coming months, further landscaping will take place, which includes tree planting, habitat creation, and the installation of fencing to improve the local environment.

Government Investment in Flood Defences

Charlie Chandler, the Area Flood Risk Manager for the West Midlands at the Environment Agency, highlighted the government’s commitment to flood defence. With an investment of at least £10.5 billion planned until 2036, this programme aims to benefit nearly 900,000 properties across the country.

Chandler expressed satisfaction with the timely completion of the Severn Stoke scheme, emphasising its importance in mitigating flood risk for local residents, businesses, and visitors alike.

Councillor Josh Robinson, Cabinet Member for Environment and Communities at Worcestershire County Council, reflected on the historical challenges posed by flooding in Severn Stoke. He noted that residents are all too familiar with the disruption and anxiety flooding can cause. The operational status of this flood alleviation scheme ahead of winter is a significant step toward safeguarding homes, businesses, and essential transport routes, offering local residents much-needed reassurance as the flood risk typically rises during these months.

Addressing Historical Flooding Challenges

The Severn Stoke community has faced extensive flooding from the River Severn in the past, with recent winters causing severe disruptions. Notable incidents have affected 18 properties, the local church, the pub, and the A38, highlighting the urgent need for effective flood management solutions.

Funding for the project was secured through the Environment Agency, which contributed approximately £5 million, with Worcestershire County Council providing an additional £250,000.

The government’s flood programme not only aims to protect properties but also plays a crucial role in stimulating economic growth. It is projected to create thousands of jobs, shield homes and businesses from significant economic losses, and facilitate the construction of new housing and commercial developments.

Community Updates

As a note for the community, the war memorial will be accessible for gatherings on the weekend of November 7 and 8, in observance of Armistice Day. Additionally, the Environment Agency has introduced a ‘one stop shop’ for flooding guidance, ensuring that residents are well-informed this winter and can receive timely flood warnings.
