Seven-Year-Old in Critical Condition Following Tragic Incident in West Mersea That Claimed Lives of Woman and Daughter

A seven-year-old boy is in a critical condition following a tragic incident at West Mersea Beach, which resulted in the deaths of his teenage cousin and her mother, police have confirmed. Sameeha Rahman, 15, and her mother Shelina Rahman, 41, along with seven-year-old Musa Ahmed, were in the water with three other family members, including two adults and another child, when they encountered difficulties on July 22.

Essex Police reported that all family members made significant efforts to assist one another during the ordeal. Sadly, Sameeha and Shelina Rahman, both from Ilford in East London, lost their lives, while Musa was airlifted to hospital where he remains in critical condition. Several other family members were also taken to hospital and are currently recovering from the incident.

Investigation Underway

Detective Chief Inspector Al Pitcher, who is spearheading the investigation, expressed his condolences, stating, “We are continuing to support Shelina and Sameeha’s family through this extremely difficult time. They had been enjoying a family day at the beach when this tragedy occurred.” He emphasised that efforts are ongoing to establish the circumstances leading up to the incident, with inquiries actively being pursued. Witnesses have been interviewed, and the investigation team will continue to collaborate with partners including the fire service, local council, and coastguard.

Chief Inspector Michelle Sparks, the district commander for Colchester, acknowledged the bravery of local residents who rushed to assist the family. “I want to thank them for their courage and selflessness,” she remarked. She also highlighted the overwhelming community support that has emerged in the wake of the tragedy, noting, “During such times, the strength of a community shines through, and we are fortunate to have such a remarkable community on Mersea Island and throughout the Colchester district.”

Calls for Improved Safety Measures

Essex Police reported that they were alerted by the ambulance service at 5.35pm on July 22, following notifications that several individuals were struggling in the water near Seaview Avenue. The East of England Ambulance Service confirmed that one patient was transported by air, while three others were taken by road to hospital in connection with the incident at Sea View Holiday Park.

Musa’s father, Shahin Ahmed, released a statement on Monday calling for a thorough review of safety measures at the beach. He expressed his agreement with local residents advocating for enhanced safety protocols, including the installation of additional life-saving equipment and clearer warning signage. “While no action can alleviate the pain we are enduring, we hope that lessons can be learned to prevent similar tragedies in the future,” he stated.
