Revamped National Policy Statement Set to Transform UK Ports Strategy

Revamped National Policy Statement Set to Transform UK Ports Strategy

On 6 July, I presented the revised text of the National Policy Statement for Ports (NPSP) to the House. Having received no objections within the 21 sitting days stipulated by the Planning Act 2008, I am pleased to announce that I am now formally amending the NPSP in accordance with section 6(9) of the Act.

The NPSP is applicable to ports across England, as well as to reserved trust ports in Wales, with Milford Haven being the current example. This framework is vital for the operational landscape of ports, which play an essential role in bolstering our economy.

Importance of Ports to the Economy

Ports are fundamental to the prosperity of our nation. They have consistently demonstrated an impressive capacity to adapt to evolving market dynamics and have made significant investments, often without relying on public funding.

The updated National Policy Statement aims to provide robust support for investment in port infrastructure. This will ensure that the development is not only responsive to the needs of customers but also contributes to the overall resilience of the national economy while maintaining a harmonious balance with the environment.

Enhancing Investment and Resilience

This revised policy framework is designed to facilitate a more responsive approach to investment in the ports sector. It recognises the necessity for ports to evolve in line with customer demands, ensuring that they remain competitive and efficient in a rapidly changing market.

Furthermore, the commitment to environmental harmony underscores the importance of sustainable practices within port operations. By reinforcing the connection between economic growth and environmental stewardship, the NPSP sets a clear direction for future developments in the sector.
