Outstanding Recognition for Devonshire Dementia Care Home

A care home in South London has received an “outstanding” rating from the care regulator, following reports from residents of noticeable improvements in their health. The Care Quality Commission (CQC) assessed Devonshire Dementia Care Home in New Malden and found that residents consistently achieved better health outcomes than expected in comparison to similar facilities. The CQC commended the provider for delivering “exceptional care and support”, resulting in a significant upgrade of the home’s overall rating from “good” to “outstanding” since its last inspection in 2020.

The recent CQC report highlighted that the home consistently supported residents in maintaining their health, taking into consideration their cultural backgrounds, personal histories, and individual preferences. Both managers and staff were noted for actively involving residents in decisions regarding their care, fostering an environment that encouraged independence.

Commitment to Safety and Wellbeing

The CQC praised the home for its effective measures in ensuring resident safety, with staff adeptly managing risks and medications. The inspection revealed that there were adequate numbers of staff, all possessing the necessary skills, qualifications, and experience to provide effective support. Additionally, the home was recognised for its fair and inclusive culture.

Residents and their families reported improvements in health and wellbeing since moving into the home, citing enhancements in mobility, nutrition, and hydration. They consistently described the staff as kind, respectful, and supportive. Notably, the home’s hydration programme has reportedly led to a decrease in urinary tract infections over the past year, while the implementation of motion sensors has significantly reduced the incidence of falls.

A Thriving Atmosphere and Engaging Activities

One resident expressed their satisfaction, stating, “There is always a wonderful atmosphere in the home and some interesting activities happening in the lounge. It’s never dull here. I can’t fault anything about the home.” The care home expressed immense delight over the CQC’s findings, with the entire team pleased with the outcome.

Amanda Partington-Todd, the CQC’s deputy director of adult social care in London, noted that the dedicated staff provided “exceptionally personalised care” tailored to each resident’s identity, history, and desires. She encouraged other care services to view the report as a model of outstanding practice that enables individuals to lead fulfilling lives.

Innovative Approaches and Community Collaboration

Partington-Todd remarked, “Residents and their relatives consistently told us they received exceptional care, and our inspectors witnessed this firsthand. They described staff as kind, respectful, and compassionate, highlighting the welcoming atmosphere, engaging activities, and positive living experiences at the home.” Staff demonstrated a deep knowledge of the residents, not only regarding their care needs but also in understanding their interests and what made them feel valued. For instance, one resident with a passion for gardening was supported in designing and managing their own garden, which greatly enhanced their confidence and sense of purpose.

Community partners have also commended the home’s leadership for their collaborative efforts in developing new initiatives and pilot schemes aimed at better serving individuals with dementia. Partington-Todd added, “Staff creatively enhanced everyday experiences for residents, using music selected by them throughout the facility, including a built-in sound system in bathrooms to promote calm during personal care. For one resident, traditional music and images from their homeland were integrated into mealtime settings to uplift their emotional wellbeing.” This innovative approach reflects the leadership’s commitment to fostering an environment where staff feel empowered to contribute ideas, embrace innovation, and continuously enhance the care experience.

Devonshire Dementia Care Home has the capacity to accommodate up to 34 elderly residents with dementia, with 32 individuals residing there at the time of the latest inspection.
