Scotland has marked a significant milestone with the inauguration of the UK’s first subsea High-Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) cable manufacturing facility in Nigg. This state-of-the-art plant, developed by Sumitomo Electric UK, represents a substantial investment of £350 million and is set to bolster the nation’s energy infrastructure.
The official opening was attended by Douglas Alexander, the Secretary of State for Scotland, who highlighted the importance of this development in enhancing the country’s role in the manufacturing of subsea cables. These cables are essential for the UK’s national energy security, with the facility expected to create 200 new jobs and safeguard many more positions across the sector.
Significance of HVDC Technology
HVDC subsea cables are often referred to as “electricity superhighways,” designed to transport large volumes of wind-generated power from Scotland to high-demand regions across the UK. This technology facilitates the transmission of electricity over long distances with minimal loss, addressing grid congestion that can lead to unnecessary shutdowns of wind farms during periods of high generation. Consequently, this advancement not only protects the environment but also contributes to the UK’s goal of achieving net-zero emissions.
During the opening ceremony, Secretary of State Douglas Alexander remarked, “Sumitomo Electric’s choice to establish the UK’s first subsea HVDC cable factory in the Highlands showcases Scotland’s potential—its skilled workforce, accessible ports, and expertise are pivotal in shaping the future of energy industries. Scotland is playing a crucial role in tackling one of the major challenges of our clean energy transition by connecting offshore wind resources to where they are needed most. This development is a significant endorsement of our capabilities.”
The Role of the Port of Nigg
The Nigg facility is strategically located within the Inverness and Cromarty Green Freeport, which has been supported by £25 million in seed funding from the UK Government to stimulate private sector investment. Alexander expressed his enthusiasm for Sumitomo Electric’s commitment, noting, “This £350 million investment exemplifies what we mean by ‘growth in every postcode’ and will create hundreds of skilled jobs.”
The establishment of this manufacturing plant at the Port of Nigg marks a pivotal advancement towards the UK’s ambition of achieving net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. Furthermore, it positions the UK alongside other G7 nations capable of producing its own HVDC cables.
Commitment to Local Development and Sustainability
Masayoshi Matsumoto, Chairman and CEO of Sumitomo Electric Group, expressed his enthusiasm during the opening ceremony, stating, “I am thrilled to inaugurate our subsea power cable factory in the UK. Sumitomo Electric is dedicated to supporting the energy transition in the UK and Europe through our cutting-edge cable technology and the highest industry quality standards.”
Matsumoto further emphasised the company’s commitment to fostering strong relationships with local communities, stating, “With this new facility as our foundation, we aim to enhance workforce development and make significant contributions to sustainability while creating hundreds of jobs.”
