Mild and Rainy Conditions Ahead, But Expect More Settled Weather Later This Week

The UK is set for a spell of warm, wet, and windy weather over the coming days, with a more settled outlook anticipated later in the week. A deep area of low pressure situated over the Atlantic Ocean is poised to influence the nation’s weather patterns, bringing a welcome increase in temperatures before introducing rain and gusty winds.

Tuesday’s Weather Overview

Tuesday will commence with a widespread blanket of cloud accompanied by drizzle in southern regions. However, as the day progresses, temperatures are expected to rise significantly, with afternoon sunshine likely to elevate readings to around 27°C, which is unseasonably warm for this time of year. In contrast, northern areas will experience a clearer but rather chilly morning, which will gradually give way to increasing cloud cover as the day unfolds.

Matthew Lehnert, Chief Forecaster, explained that the warm air being drawn in from the Atlantic is a direct result of the prevailing low pressure system. He noted that a warm night is expected across southern and eastern parts of the UK, with minimum temperatures potentially reaching 19°C in some locations.

Impending Rain and Winds

As Tuesday evening approaches, the western regions of the UK will begin to feel the effects of the advancing weather front, bringing increased rain and wind. This front is expected to move from west to east, impacting many areas late on Tuesday and throughout Wednesday.

Deputy Chief Forecaster Steven Keates provided details about the anticipated rainfall, stating that many locations could receive around 10mm, with isolated areas in southern-facing hills potentially exceeding 40mm. Furthermore, gusty winds are a concern, particularly along exposed coastal regions in the northwest, where gusts could surpass 50mph, coinciding with the arrival of large waves along western coasts during high spring tides.

Looking Ahead to the Weekend

Despite the rain and showers expected on Thursday and Friday, which may be heavy at times, there will also be opportunities for drier and brighter spells across various regions. By the weekend, high pressure is forecasted to gradually establish itself over much of the UK, which should lead to a reduction in rainfall and an increase in pleasant weather, complete with sunshine. Any light showers are likely to be confined to the far northwest.

Keates expressed confidence in the forecast, indicating that high pressure is expected to dominate the weather over the weekend, resulting in dry and fine conditions for many. Temperatures will remain around the seasonal average, with this settled weather pattern likely to persist into the early part of the following week.
