Maritime Champions Celebrated for Inspiring Future Seafarers and Supporting Coastal Communities

On 3rd September 2026, eleven exemplary seafarers were honoured with the prestigious Merchant Navy Medal for Meritorious Service, recognising their extraordinary contributions to the maritime industry. This accolade highlights the vital role of the UK’s merchant seafarers in global trade, tourism, and national security, especially as they ensure the smooth operation of commercial vessels transporting goods and passengers worldwide. Their unwavering commitment not only sustains supply chains but also bolsters economic growth and provides crucial support during crises.

Celebrating Modern Maritime Leadership

Among the distinguished recipients is Captain Joe Furness, a 31-year-old from Oldham, whose engaging social media platform, JoeTheSailor, has inspired countless young individuals to consider careers in the maritime sector. His journey into the world of seafaring was ignited by cinematic portrayals of life at sea, and he has since dedicated himself to mentoring over 100 cadets and junior officers. Captain Furness’s influence extends beyond mentorship; during the initial phases of the COVID-19 pandemic, he demonstrated remarkable leadership when ten passengers aboard his vessel contracted the virus, earning recognition from the Hong Kong Government for his exceptional care during a challenging period.

Expressing his gratitude, Captain Furness remarked, “It’s an incredible honour to be recognised and a genuinely humbling surprise. My main focus has always been to open up our world to people who don’t know much about shipping and to ensure new cadets feel supported.” He underscored the importance of education and mentorship in shaping the future of the Merchant Navy, viewing his award as a privilege to represent a modern, inclusive maritime community.

Pioneering Inclusivity at Sea

Another notable recipient is Captain Martel Fursdon, who made history as the first female captain in The Lundy Company’s history. Throughout her career, she has been a staunch advocate for safer and more inclusive practices within the maritime industry. Captain Fursdon has established a mentoring network aimed at empowering women in maritime roles and has personally guided numerous female officers. Her commitment to safety is evident in her efforts to revise safety protocols across 15 ships, alongside her vital contributions to repatriating stranded seafarers during the COVID-19 pandemic.

In her acceptance speech, Captain Fursdon shared, “I’m incredibly touched, honoured and still somewhat in disbelief to be awarded the Merchant Navy Medal. This recognition is particularly meaningful to me as a woman in a traditionally male-dominated industry. I hope it inspires young women to believe they belong in this field.”

A Lifetime Dedicated to Maritime Service

Captain Brian Nibbs, aged 87 and hailing from Jersey, was also honoured for his unwavering voluntary service to the maritime community, following a distinguished career spanning over five decades. His compassionate support for families affected by the L’Ecume II boating tragedy in 2022, which claimed the lives of three fishermen, exemplifies his commitment to the sector. Captain Nibbs’s maritime journey began in 1955 with Ellerman Lines, leading him to earn his Foreign-Going Master’s Certificate and captain various vessels, including the Fleur Des Iles. His tenure as Harbour Master of Jersey from 1997 until his retirement in 2004 further solidified his dedication to maritime safety and community service.

Reflecting on his remarkable career, Captain Nibbs recalled a highlight of sailing from the Panama Canal to Sydney in the 1960s, navigating solely by the stars—a testament to his expertise in an era predating GPS technology.

Honouring Exceptional Maritime Contributions

The Maritime Minister, Keir Mather, expressed pride in the achievements of the UK Merchant Navy, emphasising that this year’s awardees exemplify the highest standards of service, dedication, and leadership. He acknowledged the critical role played by individuals across the Merchant Navy and Fishing Fleets in maintaining the UK’s economic stability, often under challenging circumstances.

Stuart Rivers, CEO of the Merchant Navy Welfare Board, congratulated the recipients, highlighting the significance of their contributions to the maritime community. “It’s humbling to read the citations and see how these remarkable individuals have changed the lives of others for the better,” he stated, commending their outstanding service.
