Companies SEA Ltd and DAS Ltd, both supported by the UK Defence Innovation (UKDI), showcased their advanced maritime technologies at the recent Maritime Big Play event in San Diego, California. This event served as a platform to illustrate how UK innovation is enhancing operational capabilities and fostering future developments in maritime technology.
Strengthening AUKUS Collaboration
Maritime Big Play underscored the robust collaboration within the AUKUS Pillar II framework, reinforcing the commitments of the UK, USA, and Australia to maritime security and technological advancement. The event highlighted how these three nations are accelerating the development and deployment of sophisticated capabilities to tackle shared security challenges in a progressively contested maritime arena.
Representing the UK at this significant gathering were SEA Ltd, based in Frome, and DAS Ltd, headquartered in Basingstoke. Both companies presented technologies aimed at enhancing operational effectiveness in underwater environments.
Innovations from SEA Ltd
SEA Ltd showcased its Acoustic Deployment Environment Planning Tool, a sophisticated capability that utilises high-resolution environmental data alongside advanced acoustic modelling to predict and optimise underwater communications performance. This technology builds on over two decades of expertise gained through systems that have supported the Royal Navy and has been further refined with UKDI support in preparation for Maritime Big Play.
Marcus Donnelly, the Environmental Data Science Technical Lead at SEA, explained the importance of underwater communications in modern maritime operations, especially as navies increasingly incorporate autonomous and uncrewed systems. He stated, “Our Acoustic Deployment Environment Planning Tool software combines high-resolution environmental data with sophisticated acoustic modelling techniques to help operators predict and optimise communications performance in complex underwater environments, thereby enhancing situational awareness and command and control capabilities.”
Donnelly emphasised that demonstrating this capability in an operational environment off San Diego would enable further testing and refinement of the technology, highlighting its origins in proven anti-submarine warfare modelling systems that have aided the Royal Navy for over 20 years. He noted the long-term potential of reliable underwater communications for future AUKUS and other maritime operations.
DAS Ltd’s Contributions
In addition to SEA, DAS Ltd presented its Autonomous Fleet Task Assignment Framework (AF-TAF), an innovative software solution designed to enhance the coordination of fleets of autonomous underwater vehicles. Anthony Dunn, Lead Consultant at DAS Ltd, remarked on the benefits of their framework, stating, “AF-TAF enables Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (AUVs) to collaborate with reduced reliance on command and control orchestration, thus improving responsiveness and reliability in environments where communications may be degraded or denied.”
Dunn elaborated that the system employs distributed decision-making, allowing AUVs to dynamically allocate tasks amongst themselves, adapt to evolving conditions, and maintain mission effectiveness. The accompanying simulation further aids defence planners in optimising fleet structures and operational scenarios, thereby fostering a more resilient, agile, and capable maritime force for future operations involving the UK and its allies.
UKDI’s Commitment to Defence Innovation
The exercise illustrated the impact of UKDI’s investment in transitioning promising UK technologies from the development stage to demonstration alongside allied partners, bringing them closer to operational implementation. Sir Stephen Lovegrove, the Prime Minister’s Special Representative on AUKUS, attended the event, highlighting the UK’s dedication to collaborating with the USA and Australia on defence innovation.
