A significant stretch of the M23 heading towards Gatwick Airport remains closed following a tragic accident that occurred in the early hours of this morning. Emergency services were dispatched to the scene on the southbound carriageway at Junction 9 shortly before 1am. At present, details regarding the number of fatalities remain unclear.
According to an initial statement from Sussex Police, the affected section of the motorway is expected to remain closed for several hours while investigation work is conducted. Reports suggest that the collision may have involved a van, although this has yet to be officially confirmed.
Traffic Disruptions and Diversions
In light of the closure, diversions have been implemented, and motorists are advised to seek alternative routes. Traffic congestion is particularly severe between Junction 8 for the M25 and Junction 10 A264 for Crawley, with delays extending back to Junction 5. Northbound traffic is being redirected towards the A23 at Hooley to alleviate some of the congestion.
This incident is currently being treated as breaking news, and updates will be provided as more information becomes available. Authorities are urging all drivers to exercise caution and consider alternative travel plans in light of the ongoing situation.
