Israel Concludes Investigation into Strikes on World Central Kitchen Convoy: Joint Statement Released

On 1 April 2024, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) targeted a convoy from the World Central Kitchen while it was engaged in delivering food to civilians in Gaza. Tragically, this attack resulted in the loss of seven humanitarian workers, including nationals from the United Kingdom, Australia, and a dual Canadian-American citizen.

Failure to Acknowledge Responsibility

Following the incident, the IDF characterised it as a grave error and an operational failure. Over the subsequent two years, there has been a persistent call for Israel to thoroughly investigate the matter and hold accountable those responsible for this tragic event. However, the announcement made by the IDF on 19 August 2026, stating that it would not be pursuing any criminal investigations into the strike, was met with widespread condemnation. This decision, delivered on World Humanitarian Day—a day meant to honour the bravery and sacrifices of humanitarian workers—was particularly disheartening. It represents a failure to deliver justice, arriving far too late for the victims and their bereaved families, who deserve both accountability and answers.

The Ongoing Crisis for Humanitarian Workers

The attack on the World Central Kitchen is indicative of a broader pattern of impunity in Gaza, where humanitarian workers face constant threats while striving to assist civilians in dire situations. Despite the fragile ceasefire, Gaza has emerged as one of the most hazardous environments for aid delivery, with 186 humanitarian workers having lost their lives in 2025 alone. It is imperative that Israel adheres to its obligations under international humanitarian law and takes substantial measures to ensure the safety of humanitarian personnel as they carry out their essential work. The lessons from this tragedy must not be ignored.
