Free Bus Travel for Kids: A Summer Holiday Initiative to Alleviate Cost of Living Pressures

As schools prepare to close for the summer break, a new initiative will enable all children aged between 5 and 15 years old in England to travel on local buses for free throughout August. This initiative aims to alleviate financial pressures on families during the holiday season.

Free Travel Initiative Launches in Historic Bath

Roads Minister Simon Lightwood visited the historic city of Bath on 9 July 2026, where he engaged with local leaders and bus operators to unveil the government’s measures designed to ease costs for families this summer. Starting from 1 August until 31 August 2026, families can take advantage of free bus travel, with traditional child fares usually ranging from £1 to £2. The initiative builds on existing provisions that allow free travel for children under five on major bus services.

This scheme is part of the government’s Great British Summer Savings programme, which encourages families to enjoy affordable outings, whether it be exploring national parks or visiting renowned museums across the country.

Supporting Families Amid Rising Living Costs

During his visit, Minister Lightwood spoke with educators, schoolchildren, and parents to highlight the benefits of the free travel scheme. He emphasised that the initiative not only reduces transport costs but also contributes to alleviating the financial strain many families are experiencing. Alongside free bus travel, families can also benefit from discounts on children’s meals at restaurants, theatre and cinema tickets, and entry fees at various attractions, including adventure parks and soft play centres.

Heidi Alexander, the Secretary of State for Transport, remarked on the exciting prospects this initiative offers families. “The Great British Summer Savings programme means more families can look forward to enjoying activities this summer, whether that’s visiting the Roman Baths, learning at the Science Museum, or simply relaxing on the bus after a thrilling day at Alton Towers,” she stated. She further noted that the government is committed to addressing the cost of living, with free bus travel for children and a £3 cap on adult bus fares designed to make everyday life more manageable for families.

Long-Term Investments in Public Transport

The government’s efforts extend beyond the summer, with the £3 cap on bus fares set to remain in place until March 2027, making single journeys more affordable for adults as well. Earlier this year marked the first rail fare freeze in three decades, projected to save passengers approximately £600 million. This initiative is part of a broader £3 billion investment aimed at enhancing bus services nationally, enabling local authorities and operators to deliver improved and more reliable transport solutions for millions of passengers.

Mayor of the West of England, Helen Godwin, expressed her enthusiasm for the return of the ‘Kids Go Free’ scheme, which has significantly benefited families in the region. She noted the positive impact this initiative has had on families, allowing children to discover the unique offerings of the West while alleviating financial burdens on parents. Godwin celebrated the decision to expand this successful programme to a national level for August, providing West Country families with even greater opportunities to explore.

VisitEngland Director Andrew Stokes praised the introduction of free bus travel for children as an excellent opportunity for families to explore the diverse attractions and sites across England in an environmentally friendly manner. He highlighted the vast array of experiences available, from breathtaking coastal areas and picturesque countryside to vibrant urban attractions. Stokes noted that the tourism and hospitality sectors would likely welcome the boost from increased family outings this summer.
