Colleges across the East and West of Scotland are set to enhance the skill sets of young individuals, equipping them for lucrative employment opportunities in the nation’s burgeoning defence sector. Currently, Scotland benefits from over £2 billion annually in spending from the Ministry of Defence (MoD), which sustains more than 12,000 jobs in the region.
Investment in Defence Technical Excellence Colleges
Scottish Secretary Douglas Alexander has expressed his approval of the Scottish Government’s decision to match the UK Government’s £10 million commitment for the establishment of two Defence Technical Excellence Colleges (DTECs) in Scotland. This initiative is part of a broader £50 million Scottish Defence Growth Deal aimed at bolstering the country’s defence capabilities.
The DTECs are designed to create specialised pathways for young individuals into high-skilled, well-remunerated careers in sectors such as defence engineering, advanced manufacturing, and maritime technology. Strategically located to support Scotland’s defence clusters in both the East and West, these colleges will also leverage the engineering and innovation centres previously outlined in the Scottish Defence Growth Deal.
Fostering Future Careers in Defence
In a statement, Douglas Alexander remarked, “In March, we announced a £10 million commitment to develop two Defence Technical Excellence Colleges in Scotland. I am delighted that the Scottish Government has now agreed to match fund these colleges, thereby providing our young people with the necessary skills to secure high-skilled, well-paid careers in the defence sector in the coming years.”
Alexander further highlighted Scotland’s position as a significant player in the defence industry, noting the benefits from increased investment by the UK Government. This investment is pivotal in generating skilled jobs, training opportunities, and new prospects for various communities, all while ensuring national security alongside allies. He emphasised the importance of cultivating a skilled workforce to support the growth of this vital sector.
Supporting the Armed Forces and Job Creation
Luke Pollard MP, Minister for Defence Readiness and Industry, also commented on the matter, stating, “The finalisation of DTEC funding is excellent news for careers in Scotland. These colleges will offer pathways into high-skilled, well-paid roles within the defence sector, which is essential for maintaining UK safety around the clock.”
This initiative forms a crucial element of the £50 million Defence Growth Deal, announced in March and aimed at enhancing growth opportunities for Scotland while supporting the Armed Forces. Industry forecasts suggest that there may be a demand for up to 50,000 additional defence jobs across the UK by the year 2034/35.
Commitment to Collaboration and Skills Development
Scotland currently receives over £2.5 billion each year from the Ministry of Defence, directly sustaining 12,200 jobs. The Scottish Secretary introduced the UK Government’s Defence Growth Deal on 12 March, committing £10 million towards creating two DTECs—one in the East and another in the West of Scotland—as part of the comprehensive £50 million initiative.
The offer was contingent on the Scottish Government providing matching funds. On 15 October, Alyn Smith, the Scottish Government’s Innovation Minister, confirmed that Holyrood ministers would “partner with the UK Government” on this significant project, further solidifying the commitment to enhancing skills and innovation in Scotland’s defence sector.
