Families to Benefit from Cost Savings with Enhanced Heat Networks

Families across the country are poised to benefit from substantial savings on their energy bills, as over 750,000 homes are set to gain access to cleaner and more economical heating solutions. This initiative is part of a broader effort to enhance heat networks, which offer an efficient means of heating multiple buildings from a central source, such as capturing excess heat produced by data centres or factories. The system operates through a network of pipes that deliver hot water, providing low-cost heating to communities.

The government is investing £90 million to create new low-carbon heating systems and repair existing faulty infrastructure, which is expected to generate more than 2,000 jobs across various projects. In London, an ambitious heat project situated beneath and alongside the River Thames aims to supply 650,000 homes with clean heating, potentially impacting over a million residents.

Innovative Thames Heat Project

With a backing of £41 million, this pioneering initiative will transport hot water daily via electric barges along a 25-kilometre route on the River Thames, followed by distribution through a specially constructed tunnel beneath the river. This project, pending planning consent, is anticipated to unlock approximately £5 billion in investment dedicated to local heat networks in London while fostering skilled employment in tunnelling, engineering, and river transport sectors.

This marks the UK’s first venture of its kind and aims to reduce the capital’s reliance on gas. Similar systems have been successfully implemented in cities such as Copenhagen, Amsterdam, Vienna, and Berlin for decades. In Bradford, an extension of the city’s original heat network will benefit 255 homes, alongside a hospital and seven educational institutions, thanks to a £9.7 million investment.

Government Commitment to Clean Energy

Martin McCluskey, Minister for Local Energy and Jobs, remarked on the importance of clean power and heat for communities throughout the UK. He stated, “Building the infrastructure to deliver it is reindustrialising the UK and rolling out cutting-edge energy technology, enabling families to enjoy lower bills, secure employment, and energy independence.” He further highlighted efforts to upgrade existing heat networks to ensure residents receive high-quality, low-cost, and reliable heating solutions.

Additional heat networks benefiting from significant investments include:

• Solihull: £3.9 million to expand the existing network serving council buildings, a leisure centre, a theatre, and a college.
• Bexley and Greenwich (London): £11.5 million aimed at developing what could become the UK’s largest heat network, ultimately serving up to 100,000 homes.
• Marble Arch (London): £11.4 million to create a system that will serve offices, homes, hotels, and businesses around Oxford Street by utilising water-source heat pumps drawing energy from the London Chalk Aquifer, creating 200 jobs.

Upgrades to Existing Networks

In addition to constructing new low-carbon heat networks, the government has allocated £13.3 million to enhance 76 inefficient heat networks throughout England and Wales. These upgrades will include replacing leaky pipes, insulating pipework to minimise heat loss, and installing improved interface units in homes, ultimately granting residents better control over their heating and enabling them to reduce their bills.

Projects earmarked for improvements include:

• Manchester: £1 million dedicated to enhancing the heating system for 130 residents at Cornwall Court in Gorton and Cundiff Court in Levenshulme.
• London: £5.5 million to upgrade systems serving 1,143 residents at Prospect House in Bermondsey and the Packington Estate heat network in Islington.
• Wales: £374,900 to improve outdated systems at Eschol Court in Newport and Victoria Court in Abergavenny, benefiting 62 connected residents.

Success Story: Vega Building in Brighton

Residents of Southern Housing Group’s Vega Building in Brighton have reported annual savings of £438 on their heating and hot water bills following enhancements made to the heat network serving their building. Previously operating at only 35% efficiency, residents experienced a rise in energy bills in 2022 due to soaring global gas prices.

However, following a £200,000 grant from the Heat Network Efficiency Scheme, significant improvements were implemented in 2024, including upgrades to the heat network’s engine room, pipe insulation, and the installation of new thermostatic radiator valves and heat interface units. These modifications resulted in a 50% reduction in gas usage, leading to decreased bills and enhanced comfort for residents.
