Exciting Transformations Underway at Beacon Barracks: Major Upgrades in Progress

New Infrastructure Development at Beacon Barracks

A ceremonial event has taken place to signify the commencement of construction on a £206 million project aimed at enhancing infrastructure at Beacon Barracks in Stafford. This significant initiative will provide essential support to the Royal Engineers, Royal Military Police, Intelligence Corps, and the Joint Military Command – Centre, thereby improving their operational capabilities.

The construction is part of the Defence Estate Optimisation (DEO) Portfolio and is designed to prepare the barracks for the forthcoming relocation of the Royal Engineers Works Groups from Chetwynd Barracks in Chilwell, as well as the 174 Provost Company and 262 Military Intelligence Section from Venning and Parsons Barracks in Telford, anticipated to take place in 2029.

Details of the Construction Project

The Defence Infrastructure Organisation (DIO) has appointed Bovis to execute the development, which encompasses the construction of two new Single Living Accommodation blocks, each providing 116 bedspaces. Additionally, new workspaces will be established for the Royal Engineers, Intelligence Corps, and the Joint Military Command – Centre, alongside a new Police Station for the Royal Military Police.

Furthermore, the project includes the construction of new storage facilities, featuring an armoury, while several existing structures will undergo refurbishment to create additional offices, stores, garages, and training areas. The innovative designs entail the incorporation of air source heat pumps, photovoltaic systems, rainwater recovery systems, and efficient ventilation and lighting systems.

Commitment to Social Value and Community Engagement

Throughout the construction process, Bovis will implement a social value programme, focusing on creating pathways into construction careers. This initiative will facilitate apprenticeships and work placements, enhancing local employment opportunities.

On 29 October, Belinda Lunn, DEO Army Programme Director, alongside Major Davies, Officer Commanding Stafford Support Unit, ceremonially broke ground at the site of one of the new developments. Lunn highlighted the significance of the start of the main construction phase, stating that it marks an important step towards providing modern, fit-for-purpose facilities for personnel. This investment aims to improve the daily experiences of those stationed there while bolstering operational effectiveness and ensuring efficient use of the Defence estate.

Collaborative Efforts for Successful Delivery

Warren Webster, Director of Major Programmes and Projects (Army) at the DIO, expressed his satisfaction at witnessing the collaborative spirit among all partners involved. He noted that their combined efforts form the basis for the successful execution of this significant investment, enabling the site to accommodate additional personnel and directly enhance Defence capabilities.

Major Davies remarked on the commencement of yet another substantial investment in Beacon Barracks over the past decade. He expressed eagerness to welcome colleagues from the Royal Engineers, Royal Military Police, Intelligence Corps, and Joint Military Command Centre, affirming a commitment to work closely with DIO and Bovis to ensure the upgraded infrastructure meets their requirements.

Future Developments and Redevelopment Plans

Andrew Mackay, Managing Director of Public Sector at Bovis, conveyed pride in the role of delivering these critical upgrades for the DIO. He acknowledged the long-standing relationship with the DIO and emphasised the importance of providing modern, high-quality infrastructure and facilities to support the Armed Forces and their families. Mackay expressed enthusiasm for advancing the project and leaving a lasting legacy for those who inhabit and work at the barracks.
