A prominent airport in the UK has issued a timely reminder to travellers as the summer season approaches, anticipated to be one of the busiest for international flights. Heathrow Airport sees hundreds of thousands of passengers daily, and a recent message shared on the airport’s official X account urges those planning trips to “just remember”.
The post highlights the availability of over 100 touchless water stations throughout the airport, noting, “You’re never too far from staying hydrated. Just remember to empty your reusable metal or double-walled water bottle before security, and top it up before you fly.” This initiative aims to encourage travellers to stay hydrated while navigating the airport.
Changes to Liquid Regulations Enhance Travel Experience
Earlier this year, Heathrow removed its 100ml restriction on liquids, allowing passengers travelling from the UK’s busiest airport to carry liquids in containers of up to two litres in their bags while going through security. This significant change followed the completion of the installation of advanced CT scanners, which facilitate enhanced security checks.
In addition to the revised liquid regulations, travellers are also permitted to keep electronic devices such as laptops in their luggage, eliminating the need for separate screening. Furthermore, the requirement for transparent plastic bags for liquids has been lifted, streamlining the security process for passengers.
Important Travel Considerations for Return Flights
It is important to note that these updated regulations apply exclusively to departures from Heathrow. Travellers are advised to check the luggage restrictions at the airports from which they will be returning to the UK, as these may differ. A spokesperson from the Department for Transport (DfT) commented in January, “Heathrow is the latest UK airport to complete its rollout of next-generation security equipment for passengers, helping ensure security checks remain robust and can be completed smoothly.”
Airports hold the responsibility for the installation and operation of security equipment, and it remains crucial for passengers to verify security requirements with their respective airports prior to travel. The DfT spokesperson further emphasised the importance of being prepared, stating that liquids in containers larger than 100ml should not be placed in hand baggage unless otherwise advised.
