Drivers Can Save Up to 10 Days by Reporting Medical Conditions to DVLA Online

Over 60,000 drivers have taken advantage of the DVLA’s enhanced online medical service, which offers a more efficient and straightforward alternative to traditional paper applications. This service enables drivers to access information on approximately 1,600 medical conditions and how they may impact their driving. Where necessary, drivers can notify the DVLA online, streamlining the process significantly.

The DVLA is currently experiencing a surge in applications from customers with medical conditions. Utilising the online service can drastically reduce processing times in comparison to paper submissions, with some applications being processed up to 10 days faster. In numerous instances, the DVLA can initiate action on an application, such as referring it to a healthcare professional, within just 24 hours.

Convenience and Accessibility of the Service

The online service is available around the clock, seven days a week, guiding customers through each stage of the application process. This feature allows users to monitor the progress of their applications online, enhancing visibility and convenience.

The expansion of this digital service means that millions more drivers can now reap its benefits. For the first time, drivers with multiple medical conditions have the opportunity to renew their driving licences online. Additionally, those holding medical licences can renew their driving licence photo in the same transaction, minimising paperwork and eliminating the need for separate processes.

The service’s popularity is on the rise, with a remarkable 50% increase in digital uptake over the past year. Further enhancements are planned for this year, which will extend online medical notifications to additional customer journeys. This includes drivers renewing their licences at the age of 70, first-time provisional licence applicants, and individuals whose licences were previously surrendered or revoked, all of whom will benefit from online medical notifications as part of their transactions.

Government Support for Drivers

Drivers can ascertain whether they need to inform the DVLA about a medical condition by visiting GOV.UK, where the service is readily accessible.

Roads Minister Justin Madders commented on the initiative, stating, “It is essential that drivers can report medical conditions swiftly and easily. I empathise with their frustrations, which is why I have been collaborating closely with the DVLA to advance improvements in the services provided to drivers.”

He added, “This quick and user-friendly online service simplifies the reporting of medical conditions, ultimately enhancing safety for all road users. This new initiative will save individuals time and money, ensuring they can keep their licences current, and it has already proven effective for thousands of users.”

Efficiency of the Online Medical Service

Tim Moss CBE, Chief Executive of DVLA, noted, “More than 60,000 drivers have already transitioned to our online medical service, saving time, reducing paperwork, and benefitting from a quicker application process.”

He highlighted that customers might save up to 10 days by applying online rather than through post. In addition to expediting applications, users of the service have collectively avoided tens of thousands of pounds in postage costs.

With 24/7 access and the ability to monitor progress online, the DVLA is making it easier than ever for individuals to manage their driving licences in a manner that suits their needs.
