Barnsley Residents Offered Hands-On AI Training to Boost Employment and Career Prospects

Two innovative initiatives are set to be launched in Barnsley, aimed at assisting residents in harnessing artificial intelligence (AI) for practical purposes. These initiatives will facilitate job applications and interview preparations, as well as provide training for roles that increasingly incorporate digital and AI tools into everyday tasks. The AI Career Launchpad will feature flexible training and paid work placements with local employers, while the Getting Job Ready with AI pilot programme will support jobseekers in their career pursuits.

These new schemes are introduced just six months after Barnsley was designated as the UK’s first Tech Town, showcasing the potential of AI to create new opportunities, enhance local services, and bolster economic growth across every postcode.

Empowering Jobseekers with AI Tools

Barnsley residents and jobseekers will soon have access to practical assistance in utilising AI to secure employment, boost their confidence, and prepare for future career paths. The two newly announced schemes aim to provide tangible benefits through AI in two distinct ways: one will focus on training individuals for AI-related positions, while the other will equip jobseekers with the necessary skills to leverage AI tools in their job applications. This includes finding suitable roles, refining CVs and cover letters, practising interview techniques, and gaining insights into how digital tools are utilised in various workplaces.

The AI Career Launchpad, developed in partnership with Barnsley College and valued at over £400,000, will offer a more expedient and adaptable pathway into AI careers for individuals of all ages. Participants will undertake six months of training linked to a Level 4 apprenticeship, complemented by paid placements that allow them to acquire valuable experience concurrently with their studies.

Potential job roles associated with this initiative may include positions that assist businesses in the implementation of AI tools, support teams in managing data and digital systems, enhance customer service, or identify more effective uses of technology in daily operations. Local businesses participating in the programme will enjoy early access to candidates who are being trained in AI, supported by government-funded placements that introduce fresh skills to their teams. Additionally, the programme will enable firms to experiment with how AI can save time, reduce administrative burdens, improve service delivery, and foster growth.

Building Confidence for Jobseekers

Beginning in September, jobseekers in Barnsley will also receive hands-on support through the Getting Job Ready with AI pilot. This initiative aims to assist individuals who are already comfortable with technology in their daily lives but wish to enhance their confidence in using AI and digital tools during their job search and workplace preparations.

Tailored support may encompass utilising AI to identify appropriate job opportunities, customising CVs and cover letters, preparing for interviews, and understanding how employers are currently employing digital tools in their operations. Referrals to the course will be facilitated through Jobcentre Plus.

This pilot is part of a broader initiative by the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) to increase employment rates and support individuals in their career progression. This includes transforming jobcentres into comprehensive, universal jobs and careers services and expanding the support provided by work coaches.

Government Commitment to Job Creation

Andrew Western, Minister for Employment, expressed that enhancing employment opportunities is central to the government’s strategy to ensure equitable access for all communities. He noted that Barnsley is a testing ground for how AI can support this goal, enabling jobseekers to develop the confidence and skills required to compete in the evolving job market.

He further highlighted the government’s investment of £3.5 billion in targeted employment support for individuals with health conditions and disabilities, as well as a £2.5 billion youth employment support initiative aimed at assisting young people in entering the workforce.

Kanishka Narayan, the AI Minister, emphasised the transformative potential of AI within the workplace and the importance of ensuring that working individuals benefit from these advancements. He stated that the initiative in Barnsley serves as a practical example of how AI can create opportunities for local residents and support communities nationwide.

Matt O’Neill, Barnsley Council’s Executive Director for Place, articulated the town’s pride in being the UK’s first Tech Town and underscored the significance of these new schemes in enabling local residents to seize the opportunities presented by AI and digital technology. He reiterated the focus on providing practical support that significantly impacts the lives of residents, whether it involves boosting confidence for job applications, fostering new skills, or offering local businesses access to talent and innovative ideas.

David Akeroyd, Principal and CEO of Barnsley College, remarked on how the AI Career Launchpad opens avenues for careers that have traditionally been concentrated in other parts of the country. He noted that students will gain valuable knowledge and experience in AI through paid placements, thus translating their learning into real-world applications.

The pilot aims to empower jobseekers by enhancing their digital skills, which are increasingly sought after by employers. This development follows Barnsley’s designation as the UK’s first Tech Town, which has paved the way for various schemes designed to empower local residents and businesses to capitalise on AI advancements.

Success Stories and Ongoing Initiatives

One local success story is Amy Wilkinson, a Marketing Manager at Anderson Power Generation, who participated in the Build Your App in 10 Weeks course as part of Barnsley’s IgniteAI programme. She successfully developed a new HR system that streamlined the company’s processes, significantly reducing administrative burdens and allowing for greater focus on productivity. Wilkinson commented on the transformative impact of Barnsley’s Tech Town status, stating that AI has enabled people to realise previously unimagined capabilities and unlock economic potential.

In addition, Barnsley College is committed to equipping staff with the skills and confidence necessary to champion the responsible use of AI in education. Matthew Sowerby, a Tutorial Team Leader, shared how completing the Level 2 Introduction to AI course has transformed his approach, enabling him to create personalised lesson plans and streamline his teaching methods.

Future Assessments and National Implications

Alongside the newly announced schemes, an assessment set to launch in the autumn will evaluate how local charities, community groups, and social enterprises are currently utilising AI, and identify areas where additional support could prove beneficial. This assessment, led by Adobe and Barnsley CVS, will inform Adobe’s initiatives in the region, including targeted training and a showcase event to highlight available support for organisations.

These initiatives build upon Barnsley’s Tech Town partnership, which involves collaboration between government, industry, and local organisations, supported by major companies such as Cisco, Microsoft, Google, and Adobe. The insights gained from Barnsley’s approach will contribute to shaping similar strategies in other regions, as the government aims to equip ten million workers in the UK with essential AI skills by 2030. This effort aligns with the Prime Minister’s reforms to ensure that every young individual has a clear pathway into skilled employment.

As these initiatives unfold, the government continues its nationwide efforts, including the recent announcement of AI skills summer bootcamps in North West England, with plans for a broader rollout next year.

Applications for the AI Career Launchpad are expected to open this autumn, with the first group of learners anticipated to commence their training in early 2027.
