No Veteran Should Ever Have to Sleep Rough on Our Streets: A Call to Action

No Veteran Should Ever Have to Sleep Rough on Our Streets: A Call to Action

In a significant initiative, the Prime Minister has announced plans to address the issue of homelessness among veterans, ensuring that no individual who has served the country is left to sleep rough. This commitment aligns with the principles outlined in the Armed Forces Covenant and reflects a broader aim to eliminate rough sleeping in the UK.

As part of this new drive, the Prime Minister intends to personally contact councils across England, urging them to develop specific strategies to provide accommodation for veterans who find themselves without a home, particularly as the festive season approaches. This initiative is backed by record funding, with nearly £9 million allocated to housing providers nationwide to deliver targeted support in housing, employment, and health services for veterans.

Collaboration Between National and Local Governments

The Prime Minister has emphasised the importance of collaboration between national and local governments to ensure that veterans receive the necessary support. He stated that from this point forward, it should be an operating principle that no one who has served the country should be left to sleep on the streets. The government is investing an additional £874 million, bringing the total funding to a historic £4.4 billion, to support efforts in ending rough sleeping.

Councils are encouraged to utilise part of this funding to formulate specific plans to combat homelessness among the ex-forces community, working closely with local organisations and charities dedicated to assisting veterans. This strategic approach aims to create sustainable solutions and provide the necessary resources for those in need.

Targeted Support and Funding for Local Initiatives

In addition to the funding allocated to councils, £8.7 million will be distributed to eight organisations throughout the UK as part of the Reducing Veteran Homelessness Programme. This funding is designated to help local housing providers assist veterans facing complex challenges, including health issues, addiction, and employment barriers. Areas benefiting from this initiative include Scotland, Liverpool, and Kent.

The Prime Minister reiterated that veterans who have risked their lives for their country deserve more than just words of support; they deserve practical assistance, including a safe place to sleep and a comprehensive plan to help them reintegrate into society. He acknowledged the commendable efforts of many councils already working with charities to support the ex-forces community, and expressed confidence that this new funding will enhance their capabilities.

Encouragement for Veterans in Need

To further facilitate this commitment, the Prime Minister is urging any veterans currently sleeping rough, or those who are aware of their situation, to reach out for immediate support through a dedicated helpline. This service has already successfully assisted over 1,250 veterans in securing housing, demonstrating its effectiveness in connecting individuals with the necessary resources.

The Prime Minister concluded by reinforcing his determination to restore high standards of care for those who have served the nation, assuring that the government will remain steadfast in its mission to eradicate homelessness among veterans.
