Five Rescued from East London Pub Following Unexpected Flooding

Emergency services were called to assist five individuals who were evacuated from the Lord Morpeth pub in Bow, East London, following significant flooding caused by a burst water main. The incident occurred around 10.30pm on Wednesday, July 8, with firefighters swiftly responding to the scene on Old Ford Road.

The flooding not only impacted the pub but also caused disruptions for approximately 650 households, leading to outages in power, water, and gas supplies throughout the night. In response to the emergency, the London Fire Brigade collaborated with Thames Water and Tower Hamlets Council to establish a rest centre for those affected residents.

Extent of Flooding and Emergency Response

The flooding was severe, with water levels reaching up to one metre in depth, resulting in several cars being submerged. In addition to the issues on Old Ford Road, another pipe burst on nearby Grove Road, exacerbating the situation. Thames Water promptly issued a statement acknowledging the disruption and apologising to residents. They confirmed that teams were on-site, having successfully halted the flooding and were in the process of restoring water supplies. While customers were advised that their water should have returned, they were cautioned that pressure levels might initially be lower than usual, with expectations for gradual improvement.

In their communication, Thames Water indicated that repair work would take considerable time, as efforts were required to fix the broken pipe and rectify any damage caused by the flooding. To ensure public safety, the road and sections of the footpath had to be closed, with traffic diversions implemented to manage the flow of vehicles in the area.

Community Support and Ongoing Efforts

Throughout the night, firefighters employed sandbags and flood barriers to divert excess water away from residential properties, working diligently to mitigate further damage. A spokesperson for Thames Water reiterated their apologies to the community, detailing that engineers had effectively stopped the flooding and were focused on restoring full services. While water supplies had resumed, they cautioned that some residents might still experience reduced pressure as the network stabilised.

Thames Water also committed to having customer support teams in the vicinity to assist individuals affected by the flooding. They assured the community that their engineers were prioritising repairs to the damaged infrastructure and would work tirelessly to address the situation.
