Milestone Achieved in Millom Town Deal with Completion of Historic Old Bank Renovation

The Old Bank has become the inaugural project completed under the Millom Town Deal, a collaborative effort between Cumberland Council, Sellafield Ltd, and the Millom Town Deal Board. This initiative aims to support the local community and create new opportunities for residents.

Once the site of a NatWest branch, the building has undergone extensive repairs and restoration, transforming it into a vibrant space for local businesses, community groups, and visitors. The renovation was made possible through the Reactivating Heritage Buildings project, which seeks to breathe new life into historic structures.

Sellafield Ltd has made a substantial contribution of over £3.3 million to the Millom Town Deal through its Social Impact, Multiplied (SiX) programme. This initiative is designed to fund projects that benefit local residents, protect significant buildings, and foster community cohesion.

The financial support from Sellafield Ltd played a crucial role in securing £20.6 million from the government for various projects throughout Millom. The revitalisation of The Old Bank exemplifies how this investment is instrumental in repurposing vacant buildings and ensuring a sustainable future for the town.

A Vision for Millom’s Future

David Savage, chair of the Millom Town Deal Board, remarked on the significance of this project, stating, “This is the first initiative delivered through the Town Deal Regeneration Programme. It represents a long-overdue investment in Millom’s future.” He emphasised that this development will create new opportunities and foster partnerships, aligning with the ambition to make Millom an increasingly appealing location for work, leisure, and residence. “This is a proud moment for Millom, one we can all celebrate together,” he added.

Tracey West, head of social impact at Sellafield Ltd, highlighted the importance of collaboration in their approach. “A key part of our social impact strategy is working with like-minded partners,” she explained. “This allows us to attract additional funding and expertise, enabling us to achieve much more for our communities.” The completion of The Old Bank stands as a testament to this collaborative spirit, reflecting a shared vision for Millom’s future.

West further noted, “We’re investing in projects that create opportunities and celebrate local heritage, helping to build a thriving and sustainable future for the town.” This project underscores how regeneration can honour the unique characteristics of a place while simultaneously introducing new spaces for businesses, community activities, and visitors. “We’re proud to be playing our part in delivering lasting benefits for Millom,” she concluded.

Restoration and Community Engagement

The restoration work was carried out by Story Contracting, which ensured that the building’s historic features were preserved throughout the renovation process. Once the final arrangements are concluded, The Old Bank will be managed by local business owners, who have ambitious plans for the space. Their vision includes a bistro, event space, and opportunities for local artists, makers, and small enterprises.
