UK Initiative Promotes Sustainable Livestock Farming Practices in Honduras

During a recent visit to Choluteca, British Ambassador to Honduras, Juliana Correa, had the opportunity to engage with farming families who are benefitting from a groundbreaking initiative aimed at enhancing agricultural practices. This programme focuses on investment, technical support, and innovation, all designed to foster more productive, resilient, and environmentally friendly livestock systems.

Empowering Farmers with Financial Support

As part of her visit, Ambassador Correa had the pleasure of witnessing the disbursement of the first loans to eleven farming families under this initiative. These funds are earmarked for investments in low-carbon technologies, enhanced farm management practices, and measures to adapt to the impacts of climate change.

This project is made possible through the MAF programme, an international climate finance initiative supported by the UK alongside various other partners. In the context of Honduras, the programme is dedicated to improving access to finance and technical assistance for livestock producers, all while promoting sustainable agricultural methodologies.

Insights from Finca La Bendición

During her visit to Finca La Bendición, Ambassador Correa observed firsthand how local producers are embracing sustainable practices. These initiatives not only bolster productivity but also enhance resilience against climate change and promote the sustainable management of natural resources.

Ambassador Correa remarked, “The UK is proud to support initiatives that turn climate action into practical opportunities for farming families. By combining green finance, technical assistance, and innovation, this programme is helping producers strengthen their livelihoods while contributing to a more sustainable future.”

Collaborative Efforts for Sustainable Agriculture

The implementation of this project is a collaborative effort involving CATIE in conjunction with the Secretariat of Agriculture and Livestock (SAG), the Secretariat of Natural Resources and Environment (SERNA), financial institutions, and local organisations. This partnership underscores a commitment to fostering sustainable agricultural practices while addressing the challenges posed by climate change.
