£10 Million Grant Scheme Unveiled to Support Independent Pubs, Restaurants and Cafes in the UK

Local pubs, restaurants, and cafés are set to benefit from a new £10 million Hospitality Grant Scheme, which has officially opened for applications. This initiative, aimed at supporting entrepreneurs launching new ventures, will also enhance training programmes designed to provide young people with their first employment opportunities. Moreover, the funding seeks to assist established community venues in adapting to market changes and expanding their offerings.

A significant portion, over £3 million, has been allocated specifically to the non-profit organisation Pub is The Hub, which focuses on aiding pubs in rural and disadvantaged areas to diversify their services. This may involve the introduction of village shops, community cafés, play areas, and various arts and crafts activities, further cementing the role of pubs as vital community hubs.

Investment in New Ventures and Training

The funds will be directed towards projects that not only kickstart new hospitality enterprises but also reinvigorate vacant properties. Additionally, the scheme aims to bolster training initiatives that equip individuals with essential skills, confidence, and a strong work ethic, paving the way for future career opportunities. An illustrative example of successful funding application is the collaboration by The Right Course, which transformed two prison staff kitchens into a hospitality training centre. This facility provides inmates with invaluable experience in a realistic working environment akin to high-street establishments.

The Hospitality Sector Council, in partnership with innovation lab L Marks, has been actively engaging hospitality businesses alongside leading technology firms to devise novel strategies for enhancing productivity within the industry. This collaboration has resulted in significant time savings and reduced operational costs.

Government Support for Local Economies

Kate Dearden, Minister for the Future of Work, emphasised the importance of hospitality venues as foundational elements of community life, stating, “These establishments not only create jobs but also invigorate our towns and neighbourhoods.” She highlighted that this funding is intended to support local businesses in their growth journey, providing opportunities for individuals across the UK and contributing to economic vitality nationwide.

The launch of this grant scheme underscores the government’s recognition of the hospitality sector’s critical role in bolstering local economies and communities. By providing many individuals with their initial jobs, the scheme facilitates the development of vital skills that can lead to successful careers both within and beyond the hospitality industry.

Enhancing the Role of Pubs in Communities

Jane O’Riordan, Co-Chair of the Hospitality Sector Council, expressed enthusiasm for the grant scheme’s introduction, noting that it builds on a successful pilot programme. She remarked that the flexible funding would support innovative projects aimed at enhancing productivity and sustainability, while also creating opportunities for young people and those distanced from the labour market.

John Longden OBE, Chief Executive of Pub is The Hub, welcomed the new support, stating that it would inspire local publicans to diversify their services and activities, particularly in rural, remote, or economically challenged areas. He affirmed that the new funding will provide publicans with the long-term certainty necessary to develop new services that deliver social value and promote community well-being.

Collaboration for Future Growth

In collaboration with the Treasury, the initiative acknowledges the indispensable role that publicans and local pubs play as essential small businesses contributing positively to their communities. The funding scheme also encourages leveraging additional private and public funds to further bolster these small enterprises.

The grant scheme builds upon a proven pilot programme that successfully delivered over 70 rural pub projects, established two hospitality training facilities within UK prisons, and created an innovation hub. Guidance for applicants is now available, with the application process having commenced at the end of September.
