The Prime Minister engaged in discussions today with Ghanaian President John Dramani Mahama during the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting. Their conversation began with an acknowledgment of the valuable contributions made by the Ghanaian community in the United Kingdom.
Shifting focus to the Commonwealth, the leaders explored its potential to act as a positive force globally, uniting partners from diverse backgrounds to foster growth and opportunities for their citizens.
The Prime Minister shared his vision for revitalising the UK’s relationship with the Commonwealth, which includes initiatives aimed at alleviating debt service costs for smaller and developing nations. He also outlined plans for establishing a structured dialogue with partners and communities impacted by the transatlantic slave trade, an initiative that President Mahama expressed his support for.
Addressing Global Conflicts and Humanitarian Concerns
During their meeting, the leaders addressed the critical situation surrounding Russia’s unlawful invasion of Ukraine, emphasising the urgent need to cease the ongoing violence and the significant loss of life on both sides. They expressed concern regarding Russia’s tactics, particularly how promises of employment were enticing young Africans, only to lead them into perilous military training camps and onto the front lines.
Both leaders reiterated their calls for a ceasefire and the importance of engaging in meaningful peace negotiations to resolve the conflict.
Strengthening Bilateral Ties
The conversation also touched upon the strong friendship that exists between the UK and Ghana, highlighted by the new growth partnership established earlier this year, which aims to benefit citizens in both nations.
The Prime Minister expressed his anticipation for Ghana’s upcoming chairmanship of the African Union next year and conveyed his eagerness to collaborate with President Mahama during the UK’s G20 Presidency.
Both leaders expressed a desire to maintain communication and strengthen their collaborative efforts in the future.
