In commemoration of the 25th anniversary of the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI), the Secretary of State acknowledged this significant milestone in the region’s history.
A quarter of a century ago, Northern Ireland embarked on a transformative journey aimed at establishing a modern, accountable, and representative police service. This initiative was essential to garnering the support of the entire community and was a foundational element of the vision articulated in the Belfast Agreement.
Reflecting on the progress made over the past 25 years, it is evident that policing in Northern Ireland has undergone a profound transformation.
Tribute is paid to the dedicated individuals from across the region who have bravely stepped up to serve their communities with courage, professionalism, and integrity, committing themselves to the safety of the public.
Additionally, this occasion serves as a moment to honour those officers who made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty over the past quarter of a century, along with their predecessors in the Royal Ulster Constabulary. The sacrifices made by these officers and their families will forever be remembered.
Challenges and Progress in Policing
While the journey of policing has been fraught with considerable challenges, the principle of policing by consent continues to be the cornerstone of a peaceful and prosperous Northern Ireland.
To all those who serve and have served within the PSNI, gratitude is extended for their steadfast commitment to public service and their unwavering dedication to the safety and wellbeing of the community.
