He stated, “We made a promise that the opportunities created by AI would be felt by workers and communities across the town, not just those already ahead. We are calling on the most ambitious training providers, businesses, colleges, and charities to present their boldest ideas to help the people of Barnsley build the skills required to leverage AI.”

Scott Snodgrass, Director at Hawk Lifting in Barnsley, shared insights into the practical applications of AI within his business. “We have used AI in our operations, but we recognise its untapped potential. We have implemented it to create a new in-house invoice approval system and plan to extend its use to works order processing and inspection processes,” he explained. Snodgrass emphasised that embracing AI is no longer a futuristic concept, but a present necessity that can enhance operational efficiency.

Funded projects must demonstrate the potential for scalability across the UK, and findings from evaluations will contribute to broader government efforts to fulfil the commitment of equipping 10 million UK workers with AI skills by 2030.

Application Process and Timeline

Applications for the AI Upskilling Challenge Fund will open on Wednesday, 15 July, via the government’s Find a Grant platform, where detailed information about the fund’s objectives and requirements can be accessed. The total fund of £800,000 will be available until 12 August 2026, with successful applicants expected to be announced in September 2026.
